How to Make Great Snow Cream

I grew up in North Alabama, so good sized snow just didn’t come along every day. In the summer there was nothing better than a Sunday afternoon in which we made homemade ice cream. During the winter months, one of the great gifts of good snow was a big bowl of snow cream. Usually we could count on one or two batches a year. Mum would send us out into the snow and come back with a roasting pan full of fluffy fresh snow. It is best to get the snow from the highest level while it is still falling, but we know that we harvest good clean snow from anywhere we can find it. Anyway, if you’re looking for a fresh winter treat, a bowl full of snow cream is heavenly.

Here’s how to do it. You will need the following:

1 large metal pan

2 cups of sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 can Eagle Brand milk

2 eggs (you can skip these if you are tired of using raw eggs)

In a large mixing bowl, mix all ingredients except snow. Send the heartiest part of the team out into the snow with a large metal pan like a roaster or a large soup pot or two. If you have the vision, put the metal pans outside an hour or two before you plan to make the snow surface. If the pans are frozen, obviously the snow will be frozen longer.

Fold in lots of snow with the mixture of sugar, milk, eggs and vanilla. Don’t move too fast or too hard. As you fold the snow in (it may take a gallon or two), stir gently until all the ingredients are well mixed. Pour immediately into bowls, cooling ones if you think about it. You’ll have a great treat that tastes a lot like ice cream but costs you next to nothing, and you’ll have the added benefit of creating a wonderful keepsake for your children and grandchildren, who will likely Google the subject. this is 15 years from now. they start to remember at Christmas time.
