What You Can Do to Prevent Childhood Obesity

When I was growing up, not many of the children I knew were considered overweight. I think that has a lot to do with the kind of lifestyle we lived. But today, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 percent of children (more than 9 million) 6-19 years old are overweight or obese.

Just a few decades ago, you hardly ever saw a child who looked overweight. In fact, it was thought that children were often bored, until they were well into their teens and began to fill out and gain weight. Today, you don’t see many bored school children. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschoolers aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children. age 6-11 years. It is clear that parents, for the sake of their children’s health, must put together a child obesity prevention program, starting in high school.

Today, children who are still in high school are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes used to be a condition that did not develop until middle age anyway. Being overweight is a risk factor for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, along with a number of other health conditions, including heart disease.

It’s not hard to see why a childhood obesity prevention program is needed. What caused this epidemic of overweight and obese children? A brief look back in recent history and American eating patterns will provide some clear answers.

During the Great Depression, people had a hard time putting enough food on the table. As a result, very few people were obese. Children were thin, as a rule, and remained so into their adult years. Although the next generation of children, although they grew taller and received better nutrition in general, they did not develop weight problems at a young age. What we now call ‘whole’ foods, that is, unprocessed foods that did not contain too much salt and sugar, hormones, antibiotics and food additives, were the healthy foods that were served every day .

When I was a boy the term ‘couch potato’ wasn’t used yet. In fact, people would have thought you were crazy if you mentioned the need to prevent childhood obesity. These problems simply did not exist. Children got daily exercise both at school through Physical Classes and school yard recess, and asked their parents to ride bikes or go to the playground. There were very few fast food outlets or processed foods and, unlike today, most of the children’s food was not junk food. Soda, candy and occasional chips were considered everyday staples.

Perhaps the most effective childhood obesity prevention program was the return to normal eating and exercise habits in the years after World War II. Yes, at first you will have a hard time breaking the kids away from several hours of web surfing and watching television. But once they start riding bikes, playing basketball, football, volleyball or baseball for just an hour a day they are hooked and want more – just as you and I did.

Let’s face it – no child wants to be overweight or obese. Although at first you may have to get your kids to stick to your child’s obesity prevention program, once they break their old habits, they will feel and look great. They will look in the mirror and see the positive effects. I believe they will even come to enjoy their new habits. One thing is certain. For the sake of our children’s health, now and throughout their lives, we must address this epidemic of overweight and obese children now.
