The Devil Only Rules the Darkness

Keep your flame lit and you will never feel darkness. ~ J. Park

The light finally dawned on me! I’m sure you’ve heard that expression. But this time, it hit my senses hard. The devil only rules the darkness.

But! Satan and his ministers are the rulers of the darkness of this world (Eph. 6:12). So, if I stay in the light, it won’t find me! Think about it. The secret to a life free from darkness (depression, lack, anger and all negative effects) is to stay in the light.

Light is defined as illumination, but it also means understanding and illumination. It includes wisdom, understanding and insight. If you’ve ever woken up in a hotel room in the middle of the night, you know that the first thing you do is look for a light. It may appear under the entrance to the corridor. Or you turn on the bedside light – anything that helps you orient yourself.

Spiritual light does the same thing and is easy to find. The Bible says so God is light, and there is no darkness in him (I John 1:15). His presence creates light through the wisdom and revelation of His Word. And it is available to us whenever we need it. Remember, Jesus is the Word. In the beginning was the Word… In Him was life, and the life was the light of men… And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us. (John 1:1, 4, 14). Jesus is our Light, our enlightenment.

I Peter 2:9 says that we have been ‘called out of darkness into his wonderful light’. And the Thessalonians confirm that we are ‘children of light’ not of darkness (John 5:5). I like the reference ‘children’ because it links to Romans 8:17 which says that we are the children and heirs of the Almighty God. We are meant to live our lives in His light as a loving family!

Light was the first thing God created in Genesis. Where did the light come from? He came from Glory, Present. And Satan (who ruled the dark void we now call Earth) went away screeching. He could not stay in the presence of God. Darkness is always overcome by Light. One candle in a black room is enough to dispel the darkness.

Have you ever lived in a place where there were cockroaches? I did – years ago. It was terrible. But I knew one way to keep these creatures away from me. I turned on a light and they would go scurrying, trying to find a dark place to hide. I even slept with a light on to keep them out of my bedroom! I tell you, I didn’t stay in that place too long, either. I moved out – and made sure I didn’t bring any critters with me.

The devil is the same way. He cannot stand to be in the presence of God’s light. He had to go into the garden to talk to Eve. And he’s been crying ever since. His weapons are darkness and deception, fear and pain. It’s easy to tell when he’s around because there’s no peace. If it is not peaceful, it is not of God.

The night is far spent, the day is near: therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light (Rom. 13:12). It’s time to move out of the devil’s control – and make sure we don’t take any of his wrath with us. (You will find the armor that God has given you in Ephesians 6.) That means getting rid of old habits and mindsets that oppose the Word of God.

Light provides protection and security. (Don’t believe me? Try walking around in the dark!) We can live by the secure light of God’s Word, His wisdom and His grace. But we must keep His Light on in our own lives by spending time with Him through study, prayer and meditation.

You are from God, my little children, and you have conquered them: for greater is he in you than he who is in the world. (I John 4:4) Who will be victorious? Rulers of darkness! Our faith in God and His WORD can overcome anything the devil and his minions try to use to trap us and bring us down. He “seeks whom he may eat,” but we will not let him swallow us. We can be hidden in ‘the secret place of the Most High’ (Psalm 91:1). If we stay there, Satan can’t get to us! He sure doesn’t invade God’s place! Jesus already beat him well and left him powerless and shameless (2 Col. 2:15).

You are more than a conqueror through those who loved you (Rom. 8:37). Jesus had victory over everything on this earth, storms, leprosy, hatred, sickness, even death – and he gave that victory to you and me. The devil no longer has real power; his only weapon is deception – trying to make us believe that God’s Word (His Light) is not true or will not work for us.

But the Psalms declare that the Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path and that ‘entering into words gives light’ and understanding (Ps. 119:105, 130) . The Apostle Peter confirmed for Christians the New Testament when he announced that we should pay attention to the word ‘about a light that shines in a dark place’ (2 Peter 1:19). He also asked us to continue until the day dawns – until we receive the revelation and illumination of the Word.

I have come as a light to the world, so that whoever believes in me will not remain in darkness (John 12:46). Death (the final darkness) is ruled by Satan. It’s his area. 2 Timothy 1:10 says that Jesus abolished death and brought life and immortality to light. How come? Through the gospel, according to the same verse. Overcoming death was our first victory as born again Christians. Spiritually, we moved from death and darkness to Life in Christ Jesus!

… He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world. In us, in our spirits we have a lot of power! Jesus lives in us! We can meditate on his word until it overflows into our spirits. Then we can speak His word and manifest our victory! God gave us authority to use His Word to get His results. When we speak the Word, Jesus speaks … through our mouth. He has authority as close to your tongue!

You are all children of the light, and children of the day: you are not of the night, nor of the darkness (I Thess. 5:5). God wants us to live prosperous lives, full of light. He has planned an abundant supply of every good thing we will ever need. Every good gift and every perfect gift coming to us from the ‘Father of lights’, the Creator of light and illumination.

It is so easy to get bogged down in everyday problems. Too much to do, people against people, and there are health challenges with bills to pay and various other issues. Sometimes it just seems like too much, period.

The problem is… we spend too much time looking at the problems! That is exactly what the devil wants us to do. He wants us to be too busy to spend time in the Word. He wants us to be so overwhelmed that we forget to pray. He wants us to forget the confessions we wrote and carry with us. (I have all of mine on my album – very convenient…if I make the time to look at them!)

If you feel terrible, turn around. The Face of the Son. You know how wonderful it is to be in the sun. When you face the sun, the shadows are behind you. It is the same with God’s enlightenment in your heart. He has the wisdom and power to defeat anything you face…if you fill yourself with His light.

If we remain ‘rooted and established’ in His Word, His ways and His wisdom, we can avoid the darkness or defeat it. We don’t need to hang around in Satan’s domain. The devil only rules the darkness. We can surround ourselves with The Light!
