An Integrated Approach to Treat Depression

Depression, anxiety, phobias and mental health appear almost every day in the media and it seems that depression is fast becoming one of the biggest problems in society- social. These conditions are increasingly affecting people living in today’s world and research has led to estimates that at least 17% of the adult population have, or will have, had a depressive episode of sufficient clinical severity to warrant treatment. A National Institute of Mental Health special report on Depressive Disorders in 1973 stated that depression accounts for 75% of psychiatric hospitalizations and that 15% of adults between the ages of 18 and 74 may have ‘suffer symptoms of depression in any year. Current studies indicate that the lifetime risk of depression in the adult population may be as high as 30%.

Along with the increased prevalence of depression has been an explosion in the use of prescription drugs to treat the condition, but recent reports have questioned whether these are effective or actually just creating more problems for the patient. So there is a growing interest in finding a new approach to treat these conditions. Having trained in clinical psychology and psychotherapy I can incorporate many of the accepted practices. However, the more I worked with individuals and groups I found myself incorporating the inspiring Eastern techniques I learned in India , that I was able to achieve much more effective and lasting results within a shorter period of time.

Understanding Depression

In psychiatry depression is known as a mood disorder. People have known about mood disorders since ancient times; the old testament tells that king saul was suffering from serious mental events. However, the term encompasses a wide spectrum of emotions ranging from deep depression to boundless elation and mania, so understanding the behavior of individuals suffering from depression can be difficult. be very demanding.

Everyone experiences a range of emotions and in general they are a healthy part of life and the expression of appropriate emotions contributes well to our well-being. However, there are two main types of emotions; firstly affective feelings, in other words a short-term emotional response to an event, and secondly emotion, which is a permanent and dominant emotional response that colors the whole mental life.

Over 90% of people with depression experience prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness or a feeling of not caring anymore. However, to classify someone as having a major depressive episode, clinicians look for five or more of the following symptoms to be present in the previous two weeks. There should also be a noticeable change in previous work with at least one of the symptoms of either depression or loss of interest or pleasure.

Indications:

1. Feeling depressed most of the day.

2. Significantly reduced interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day.

3. Significant weight loss when they are not dieting, or weight gain eg. A change of more than 5% of body weight per month. Or decrease or increase in food almost every day.

4. Insomnia (lack of sleep) or hypersomnia (too much sleep) almost every day.

5. Psychiatric effects or delays almost every day.

6. Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day

7. Feeling worthless or too guilty or inadequate

8. Reduced ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness

9. Recurring thoughts about death

There is no reason as to why people are diagnosed with depression. Research points to many factors that appear to contribute to the development, including genetics, biochemical changes and personality theories. Several research papers have reported results that indicate that relatives of patients with major depressive disorder have a higher incidence of depression than the general population. Other research has focused on the biochemical correlates of depression and has examined the role of chemicals that transmit nerve impulses from one neuron to another in the brain. Although several theories related to depression have been developed in terms of personality types.

My experience as a doctor has made me look at each client as an individual who needs personal attention. Human beings are complex creations whose health and well-being depend on balance in all dimensions of their lives, from physical health to behaviour, energy and even environmental aspects.

Treating depression

Traditional western medicine usually treats depression using medication eg. Tricyclic, heterocyclic anti-depressants and the new SSRT drugs. The psychological therapies commonly used to treat depression are individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Eastern Psychotherapy integrates eastern techniques, such as meditation, yoga, pranic, or energy, healing, mantra and sound healing, with elements of traditional psychotherapy developed in the West. When treating depression and other mental health conditions it is essential to look for the causative factors and analyze the issues using ayurvedic principles as well as recognizing the spiritual component. It may sometimes be appropriate to examine the astrological chart of the person being treated to seek a better understanding of the effects affecting the individual and gem therapy, which is commonly accepted in many parts of Asia, to recommend.

There is no doubt that the treatment of conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety is enhanced by the use of complementary techniques. The value of seeking help from professionals who have worked with both approaches is that they can choose the right treatment option for each individual. Orthodox methods often effectively treat the symptoms, but eastern practices can be more helpful with the underlying causes. A therapist who understands each person’s personal needs is better able to provide them with a powerful approach to their illness. For some the focus may be on traditional Western methods, but for others accelerated and progressive results can be achieved by blending the best of East and West into an integrated treatment program.

With an integrative approach to depression most people can benefit within 3 or 4 sessions, sometimes even less, depending on the nature of their condition. It is important with any therapeutic approach to ensure that clients do not develop a dependence on the treatment or experience only temporary relief because the underlying causes have not been addressed.

CASE STORY

Miss K, a 35-year-old woman, did not respond to standard treatment. A comprehensive approach included energy and environmental assessments as well as her medical background. She had a five-year history of depression that had been particularly severe in the previous six months. She was using anti-depressants and had gone through several counseling sessions that she did not like.

The assessment of the energetic level revealed some blockages in the heart and solar plexus chakras. Her home environment was dark and gloomy with black and gray as her main color choice; there was no energy flow.

She was recommended to try a variety of energy therapies including Reiki and music/mantra therapy along with some suggestions about changes to the home environment. She also used herbal medicine (St John’s Wort), massage and acupuncture and started six sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy. Her program lasted six months, but she responded very well and has been depression free for over a year reporting that she feels generally well, has an active interest in life and personal development .
