Care of Wild Baby Mice

If for some reason wild baby mice have been placed in your care, I have included some tips on care and feeding to help you give them a chance at life. Note that even in the wild, mice have a 50% chance of surviving beyond 5 months of age, with normal education. The mice that make it can live up to about 5 years if they are healthy. A pair will have a better chance of survival than a single mouse.

Once you have your baby mice, it’s important to keep them safe and warm. You can use a small pet carrier, a large plastic tub or any other suitable box in which to place them. Fill the bottom with a towel and place the mice on top. Then, use another soft material to lightly cover the mice like a fleece. Place the box in a warm place, making sure it is not hot; otherwise the mice will be dried. A heater on the lowest setting is probably all that is needed. Test the towel the mice are resting on until it is comfortable and warm in your hand.

If the baby mice are less than 14 days old they need to be dropper fed with a milk dispenser until they are weaned. They usually open their eyes when they are just weaned and able to eat on their own. You have to feed them every 2 hours so be ready to get up during the night. Set your alarm. When I was looking for wild mice, I was getting up every 2 hours to check them. I have since read that at night the mother mouse would be off looking for food and would probably only return to the nest once to feed her babies. Use common sense, if you can manage a few night feeds, the better children can live, especially in the early days.

Kitten milk is available for purchase at pet stores. I used raw coconut blended up and stretched. It should be 1 cup coconut to about 2 and ½ cups water. You could also use blanched almonds to make almond milk using the same proportions. Make sure the nuts are natural and clear. Once you have made up the milk, store in a sterilized glass jar and keep in the fridge until needed. When you go to feed the mice, take a quarter of a cup of milk and warm it by pouring it in a small jug and standing in hot water. Use a baby dropper or syringe (you can get these at the pharmacist) to feed 1 or 2 drops of the milk at a time into the baby mouse’s mouth. When the mice are very young, they may not open their mouths. Be careful not to get the milk up their nose, they will splutter/cough if you do. It can be dangerous for their health if you do. The way I fed the mice was to put a face cloth down on a table and put one mouse on it at a time. Then you can hold the baby’s head gently while you take the milk with the dropper. You will get the hang of it with some practice. The baby may not seem to be giving much milk, don’t worry. Very young babies may only need a drop or 2 on their mouth/tongues to get them to take more. The main purpose here is to keep them hydrated with a few drops at a time every two hours.

Once the baby is fed, you need to encourage wheel movement. To do this, put some warm water in a small bowl and put a cotton ball in it. Then, place the cotton bud between the baby’s back legs and gently twist the bud. You should see some brown color, that is the poo. Dip the other end of the bucket into the water and gently stroke the baby’s body, this imitates the mother licking it. After that, put the baby up in a soft bed and put it in a warm place. This is the basic routine that must be repeated every two hours during the day and at least 2-3 times during the night, especially around 1 am and 5 am.

As you can see, he is very enthusiastic, looking after wild baby mice. However, there is also great reward in caring for them and the connection you feel as a carer.

When babies start to open their eyes or at least take a nap, they may be giving a lot more milk and start walking around a bit. This is when you have to be extra careful; one fall is enough to be fatal. You can make some safe moving space in the bottom part of a pet’s cage or shoe box/basin. Fill it with newspaper and leaves to simulate a natural environment. The youngsters will enjoy stretching their legs and taking their first steps. This is important, because it will build up their muscles and strength.

As soon as the babies start biting your fingers very firmly when you feed them, they may be ready for some solid food. They also start to open their eyes (12-14 days old) Start slowly with this. Try some baby fruit puree for starters or natural rice pudding. The food should not be refrigerated. Let them rip it off your finger. Avoid putting the puree on a dish that the mice will eat, because they could be messy and end up with matted fur, which must be avoided. Some other foods for graduation are porridge, banana, tomato, dried oat flakes, straw. Just go easy on the food and keep it simple and easy to digest at first. Congratulations! You have actually reached the weaning stage, which is quite something with wild baby mice.

Continue to give the mice a safe place to sleep and once they are weaned, they will be able to come out at night to feed. Give them a small snack near the bed so they can eat through the night. At least you can get some sleep now! Continue offering the milk throughout the day and give them some water. Normally, wild mice will still have some mammary milk up to about 4 weeks of age.

Now you have to decide whether to keep them or release them. I don’t know how many mice have been successfully hand-raised and released into the wild. I would think it unlikely that they can survive. However, you have done your part and if they seem strong, healthy and very active, it may be possible to release them. Or, you can keep them as pets.

Finally, if you did your best and the mice died, don’t feel bad. Chances of survival in the best conditions ie with their natural mother are still low. Just enjoy the experience you got with them and the chance to get a glimpse into their little lives. They are little love bags and it is wonderful to have at least given them a little love when they could have died.
