Oops – Put My Cell Phone In The Refrigerator – "Old People"

I was surprised by the fact that I am getting old the other day when I heard a strange muffled sound coming from my refrigerator. When I open the door there my cell phone went off. While I was laughing with my son telling what happened all he said was… “Old people”. Time to retire, uh? It is not. My business is to live as long as I can, and as well as I can, and to serve my Savior as faithfully as I can, until he thinks the time is right. I have my call Home.”

“As you hold forth the word of life, so that I may boast in the day of Christ that I did not run, nor did I labor for anything.” — Philippians 2:16. Paul emphasizes here that when he goes to meet the Lord he wants to be sure that his life has not been spent in vain, sitting around doing nothing for the Lord.

George Whitefield, a great evangelist, one day was talking to some friends and told about the problems of the ministry. He explained that he was tired and that he was happy that his work and his ministry would soon be over. He said that he would like to leave this old earth to be with Christ.

His friends agreed with him – all but one, Mr. Tennant. Noting his disapproval, Whitefield said, “Well, Brother Tennant, you are the oldest man among us; aren’t you glad to think that you have time to go home near?”

Tennant replied sharply, “I have nothing to do with death. My business is to live as long as I can, and as well as I can, and serve my Savior as faithfully as I can, until he thinks it’s time to call me home.”

The thousands of Christians who have retired are willing to sit idle, without doing anything to serve God, or learn new things, grow spiritually, or deepen their step with the Lord . When did they ever have so much time? Now is the perfect time for you to spend time studying God’s Word. You can keep a journal of daily thoughts, memorize Scripture, or use various Bible study books to provide a more in-depth study of a particular subject, book, or topic.

It’s never too late to start. When you begin to regularly walk with the Lord and spend time with Him, you will begin to see other areas of your life improve, no matter how old you are, or how long as you have been a Christian.

On the other hand, I hear retired Christians say, “I’ve done my time. It is time for the youth to step up and take care of things now. I want to kick back and enjoy my retirement”. But the scripture commands us to work until the day of the Lord. Retirement should bring joy knowing that there will be more time to serve God, to learn new things, to grow spiritually, and to deepen your walk with your heavenly Father.

HAS YOUR MISSION BEEN COMPLETELY ACCOMPLISHED?

When Joshua was old, and well advanced in years, the Lord said to him, You are too old, and there are still large areas of land to take over. — Joshua 13:1,6

Joshua had accomplished much on the battlefield and in taking the Promised Land. However, in a very old age, he did not have a command from God to take the whole land fulfilled. The Lord had to remind Joshua that his mission was not fully accomplished.

Isn’t it interesting that God did not look for a younger leader to continue the work, but went straight to Joshua even in his old age? God went to the person who did a lot and asked him to continue with his purpose. The Lord was not finished with Joshua, and He is not through either.

LOOKING FORWARD

“Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day…” – Joshua 14:12

“Give me this mountain,” said 85-year-old Caleb. Moses promised him. He had no intention of retiring. The work was still unfinished. Caleb sought a treacherous place called Hebron, near Kadesh Barnea where he had first spied the land 40 years earlier.

But Hebron was also famous for something else. It was known as the place where God spoke to Abraham face-to-face, and gave him the promise of the land in the first place. The very name Hebron means association, love, and communion.

This is the place Caleb wanted and got. While others were looking back, Caleb was looking forward. And that is the key to spiritual longevity: you must always be moving forward, always trying to grow spiritually – and never look back.

There is no retirement from the Christian life or from the spiritual battle. God may give us the privilege, like Caleb, to live to be 85 or more. Or maybe it isn’t. But we should have the same humility as Caleb, the commitment to get up every morning and say, “What lies ahead? I am available. I am ready. Give me this mountain.” That’s the way we should live every day – not in the past, not looking over our shoulder at the good days, but instead looking forward to Jesus, until he is I think it’s time to call us Home.

Until it comes, it is God’s will and purpose for every Christian to bring others to Christ. “And he said to them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mark 16:15

Witnessing is difficult for many Christians. But thousands are beginning to bring others to Christ through the “Bridge Ministry”. We often don’t realize that some of the best gifts God has given us are the things we love to do. We often think of these gifts as something that God has blessed us with, to bring us joy and happiness in our lives. While this is true, these gifts were also given to us to be a bridge to bring other people into the church, and to him. It doesn’t have to be a struggle to bring others to Christ. It can be as simple as sharing “What you love to do” with others.
