o Choose a soft bristled brush over the hard brush as the hard ones tend to cause gingival recession. Softer bristles mean more flexibility, no damage to gums and better cleaning under the gingival margin.
o The head of the brush must be fairly small to allow it to clean difficult areas of the teeth.
o The handle should allow the user to take a comfortable grip.
o The design or shape of the neck or handle of the brush is not important to effective brushing (as manufacturers often say). You should choose what suits you.
o Powered toothbrushes do not have a huge advantage over hand brushes as many thought. Electric brushes are recommended for disabled or bedridden patients, children, patients with orthodontic appliances, patients with poor motor skills although they can still be chosen according to personal preference.
When should I replace my toothbrush?
Now, moving on to when you need to replace your brush. It is common to see people using the same old brush until the bristles wear out and still not making them change the brush.
According to the ADA (American Dental Association) a toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months or when the bristles show signs of wear, whichever occurs first.
If you notice your toothbrush wearing out too soon such as less than a month, this is a sign of excessive brushing and should be avoided as it causes gum damage, bacteremia and painful ulceration of the gingiva.
Similarly, a toothbrush that does not show signs of wear and tear even after 5-6 months indicates that the brushing is too gentle and you should try to address this issue.

Another important thing that most people are usually unfamiliar with is the need to replace the toothbrush after a cold, flu, sore throat or oral infection as micro-growth can -harmful organisms accumulate on the brush leading to re-infection.
