5 Stages of Silky Terrier Puppy Development
Will you add a Silky Terrier to your life? Knowing about your puppy’s development and what to expect for the first year of their life can cut down on a lot of frustration. The way your Silky Terrier puppy thinks and acts may make you grind your teeth sometimes. But it also brings a smile to your face.
Raising a Silky Terrier in its first year is a lot like raising a child through their first year. Except the pet ends up being a teenager at the end of the year.
When you first get a puppy they eat, play, drink and poop. Just like babies cry to indicate their needs, puppies bite or get super hyper to let you know they need something too. If it’s urgent, they’ll keep it up.
It is important not to be angry or harshly discipline your new puppy. This undermines their trust in you and also disturbs your relationship. Silky’s are sensitive little terriers.
The five stages of puppy development you will see in your Silky Terrier are:
Infancy – Weeks 8 to 12
At this stage they are curious, playful and have little attention span. This is quite normal for a healthy, active puppy. Yes, it’s normal to get into everything and chew. They love to explore their surroundings—so make sure you take off your slippers and don’t leave any food on the table. It won’t be there when you return.
Start pre-training your puppy at this point too, but don’t set them out to memorize everything.
Terrible Two – Weeks 12 to 16
That’s right. You will go through it with your puppy even though you may have experienced it with your children already!
But your puppy is also starting to grow into their personality. Being more active and adventurous than before.
At this stage they have a fully developed brain so you can start training.
Juvenile – 4 to 6 months
At this stage of puppy development you may notice that they want to avoid people, places or situations. Introduce them slowly to the new situation and let them take their time to get to know things.
Puberty — 6 to 9 months
Just one word here…hormones. Your puppy is going through a lot right now. Just remember when they seem to be doing something they are not supposed to be doing. In addition they may have a complete vision. Sound familiar?
Adolescent — 9 to 12 months
They are starting to settle down and act like mature young adults. Although sometimes they just need to push the rules a little, but not too far. You will notice that they don’t bother themselves when guests come and they come when you call them.
Living with your Silky Terrier is one of the greatest joys you can experience.
