The Herxheimer Reaction
So, these past few days I’ve been surprisingly reminded of just how lousy I might feel. In fact, I had been making great progress in the last couple of months since my mercury amalgams were removed. I was on the road to recovery and enjoying the benefits. I could do tasks that were once too big for me to even think about. That was until today! Boy what a rude awakening. Last night, I went to sleep with a headache. I could hardly think or do anything. I was watching a movie, without really watching, as it was hypnotizing. I could not work. My head hurt and I was very tired. I fell right asleep when I laid down that night. During the night, I woke up about 5 or 6 times to use the bathroom. Every time my head hurt, I was dizzy, and crazy. I probably drank 1/4 of a gallon just that night. I had a cotton mouth like you couldn’t believe. I felt my heart beating out of my chest. Walking to the bathroom made me smile. Every time I woke up I found myself covered in sweat with a painful roar of nausea. Many times I swear I was close to bleeding gums. I slipped in and out of my strange sleep state every 2 hours or so. It was terrible. I had the craziest dreams/nightmares, and not just one, but a few. It was just weird. The next morning I woke up with a huge headache and feeling dizzy. I did my daily routine and started eating breakfast. Halfway through I got nausea and stopped eating. I just felt sick. I made my way to work. By the time I got in I was breathing like I had just run a marathon. In the morning I tried almost 6 times. I didn’t get any job. It was hell on earth again. Back to my old ways.
I began to think “what could have started to feel so bad all of a sudden?” Then it sunk in on me. I had just started a regimen of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and Grapefruit Seed (GSE) 3 days prior to improve my skin and some Candida that I had allowed to take over while dragging on the I have low carb. diet (I like potatoes). “Duhh…”, I thought. I was having a herxheimer reaction, die-off, or herx. And was he a bad man. I haven’t had one in a while, so I guess it was close. I started taking too much MSM (0 grams per day to 2 grams per day). I didn’t even think to phase. I got a little silly I guess. Anyway, I’m writing this to share the effects of dying and what symptoms they produce, so you know what to expect while taking it. -incorporate new natural products into your daily routine.
The herxheimer reaction is the release of endotoxins after many bacterial, fungal or parasitic organisms die. During herx. the amount of endotoxins released far exceeds the body’s detoxification capabilities and thus produces “fever, chills, rigors, hypotension, headache, tachycardia, hyperventilation, vasodilation with flow, myalgia ( muscle pain), and worsening of skin lesions. ” This sounds so familiar, especially the tachycardia that was bothering me so much. My heart was probably at 120 BPM while I was sleeping!
When you start getting to know herx. answer you should start a detoxification protocol immediately. In fact, if you plan properly you may be able to remove the herx completely. response from your healing process. If you start a detox before adding a new medicine, that may kill a large number of pathogens, than may be safe from herx. reaction If you gradually increase the dose of your new substance you can also be safe from herx. Personally, I feel that I feel the herx. it’s good sometimes, that it reminds you that the new stuff is doing what it’s supposed to. It is a blessing in disguise.
You can expect herx. It can last anywhere from two days to a few weeks. It should not feel more than 2 weeks, but in some extreme cases this could happen. I only have a few last longer than 3 days. Usually when you start to feel an allergic reaction you should reduce the dose to a lower level so that the symptoms are more manageable. As soon as the symptoms start to clear you can then up-the-anti and take more of the supplement, eventually reaching your goal dose.
Sweat, water, and vitamin c are a good way to help your body remove the endotoxins. Make sure you drink about a gallon of water a day. Take a detox bath at night before going to bed. This bath includes 2 cups of Epsom salt, and 1 cup of baking soda. You can add some lemon or lavender if you feel the need for a little medicine (always helps). Do not make it too hot as this will put more burden on your body. Apply this solution for 30 minutes. When you come out drink enough beer and then go straight to bed. In most cases you will be so tired that the bed will be like a stretch to get. Also, make sure you take enough vitamin c and antioxidants throughout the day. It is a good idea to take 1 gram of vitamin C every few hours. This will help your liver to flush out toxins. Don’t forget to take your daily dose of milk thistle to help your natural biological filters. Remember to eat healthy and avoid sugars and caffeine. Get lots of fresh natural air. Take a walk; try to keep your mind off the symptoms. Thinking about it only makes it worse. I would not recommend pain meds or OTC meds during herx. These just fill your natural detoxifies and make things worse.
Overall, a herx response can be very painful and discouraging, especially if it comes out of the blue like my last one did. It can make you feel really bad for several days and do numbers on your emotions and mental progress. Remember though that it is only temporary and there is light at the end of the tunnel. When you get there the highest blue sky will be revealed. You will feel clearer and pain free. It’s a pleasant surprise. Your energy will improve, brain fog will decrease, and your overall sense of well-being will be greatly improved.
