Want To Get Promoted? Develop The Habit Of Going The Extra Mile (GTEM)

Richard A. Chambers (Rik, his nickname, for short) was my Training Manager/Coordinator in Guinness Nig. Ikeja Brewery Plc, Lagos in 1994/95. During approx. one year I told him, he challenged me again to “build” myself to be highly competent as a brewer and manager.

By the time I left for Benin Brewery, I had four spiral bound training reports (typed by myself) full of great photos (taken by Rik) of almost every process area/ plant I was trained on. These documents – just as Rik assured me they would be – were to become very useful references during the following years in the company. In fact many new entrants (and some older managers) at various times have to borrow and make copies!

But that’s not all. It was Rik’s ability in Lotus Spreadsheets Macro Programming that brought us close. Over a period of 6 months he – in accordance with the formal role assigned to him – independently developed an automated brewery Variable Cost Analysis Grid Application that was adopted by both Lagos and Benin Breweries for performance reporting purposes MIS formal brewery.

Fortunately for me, he noticed my interest in watching him do the furious coding for various data entry/report generation interfaces, and decided to introduce me by giving me a laptop, and making me check for errors in the formulas.

As time went on, he started giving me copies of ALL the code in the various applications – for brewing and packaging departments. I was still a trainee, but 6 months after restarting in Benin Brewery, I was formally in charge of maintaining/updating the Rik software for Benin Brewery. This was ALL senior management level work – the very complex formulas for calculating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) would have scared most people off, but Rik had prepared me well.

Little wonder then that by 1997, I had successfully developed four custom reporting applications to replace manual data processing systems in the Brewing department. Over time, other departments found a need for my skills – including Engineering Services and Packaging Departments.

But do you know the best part? I did all this informally – in my spare time – while still working full time as a brewer/manager. No one gave me time off – and I didn’t ask for it. The challenge was there – and I was up to it, and the passion/commitment to make a tangible difference was enough. After watching Rik do so many things outside of his brief, I had no problem doing the same. He had set a good example.

The time I spent with Rik prepared me for my later successes at Guinness. Examples include naming the company-wide Project Insight team that developed comprehensive formats for data collection technical report, analysis etc. trips abroad to attend international courses.

But I didn’t rest on my laurels – in fact, before I left the company (to start my own business), I had successfully acquired MS Excel-VB programming skills through self-taught, ‘ take advantage of the company’s move from Lotus. Smart Suite to MS Office. So, I didn’t just JUMP into developing custom spreadsheet solutions. I have been doing it for YEARS before I got into it as a business.

It is important not to get in your head, or to think that you are better than those who are less talented at what you do. I will never get big enough to call anyone – even a 5 year old – a little boy or girl. The last thing I ever want is to be a BIG person – you know the type to put on all kinds of airs because they have money/power or position. It’s ironic that billionaires like Warren Buffet who have MORE reason to be involved in BIG still use old model cars and still humble!

This article has been written to encourage any person(s) currently in paid employment who may feel that it would not be in their best interest to allow themselves to be drafted into roles they consider outside their job description. Many times opportunities for growth, progress and success come disguised as work – to paraphrase Thomas Edison.

And that’s why most people miss them! If you want to set yourself up for lasting success, make sure you achieve full mastery of your core responsibilities in a way that allows you to successfully take on MORE challenges, making decision makers SEE that ability to hold positions with higher responsibilities.

Some people get carried away with the “status” they think their jobs give them. They get pregnant by acting like BIG men and women. This mentality makes them feel that there are certain roles that they are too big to play. And this causes them to miss out on career advancement – especially in a company that is looking for independent leaders, to make things happen.

A true minded decision maker is not going to give you a promotion or a career advancement opportunity without making sure you have the ability – and the lasting passion – to deliver the results you want. Develop a Going The Extra Mile (GTEM) practice in your work, starting today, and see yourself moving to NEW levels of success!
