How To Manage When A Health Crisis Hits!
Brain tumor! really?
This was my reaction last April 2012 when I was diagnosed with a 3 centimeter tumor in the left side of my brain. What happened to simple illnesses such as a cold, or if that didn’t get my attention what about an illness that was less life threatening? Of course these questions cannot be answered, so I made a decision. I would do the best I can and use all the tools available (medical and otherwise) to manage this crisis, learn from it, grow with the experience and free myself from it! This is the first of several articles that will describe the healing process and understand how to make the most of a health crisis.
My Story: It is traditional at Easter Dinner for all participants to read. When it came to my turn, I tried to read and couldn’t! Of course I immediately went into denial. “I’m tired from all the cooking” and “I just got a new puppy”. Well that didn’t matter. What did my good friend Judy do who yelled at me “Call the doctor.” “But I was in the middle of a TV show”, I complained. She and my husband wouldn’t leave me alone so I called. Two days later I had an MRI and 4 hours later I was up at Cedars Sinai Hospital with the best neurosurgeon in California. Three days later I had surgery to remove the tumor.
The good news… they all got it… the bad news… it was aggressive and I had to do radiation for 6 weeks and chemotherapy pills for 6 weeks. The protocol for treatment is 5 days of chemotherapy pills every month for a year. I have also entered a clinical trial at Cedars Sinai for a vaccine that destroys these cells. The end result of the surgery is that I am healthy but I still can’t read or drive… second… more to deal with! I believe we have lessons to learn from the crisis in our lives. I will address that important issue in a later article.
I told you my “story” because I didn’t want you to be involved in what happened. What matters is what I decided to do about it and the journey I’ve been on for the past six months.
When it is first confirmed, after the initial fear and apprehension, we move into action. We listen to the doctors and choose who we want to be in our team. There is a lot of pressure on everyone to do the ‘right’ thing. But what is right? How do you know what’s right for you? The questions flood your brain. He tends to leave the decision to the doctors or family members. Don’t do that! Keep calm. Feel the emotions that come up. Then come back to yourself, your truth, your understanding, and what you believe in. This is the only place where you can listen to yourself. It became clear to me that I needed traditional and holistic treatment. I saw it as full circle. Very simple. Now I had to find out what was in the circle.
I knew I needed an advocate, a therapist who could keep me in tune with myself so the fears wouldn’t take over. I knew I was going to do Western medical treatments, even though I had always been suspicious of the traditional medical community. I took a leap of faith and realized that they are experts in treating tumors, they are professionally trained, and I would receive good advice and guidance. I listened to my family and friends and made my own decisions. I looked at all the options and ideas that were presented to me. I believe that when an idea comes to me I should pay attention. It’s an opportunity that may or may not be right for me. I decided yes to a nutritionist, yes to my holistic medical doctor (which I already had), and yes to a clinical trial for an anti-cancer vaccine. I decided against acupuncture and several other healing methods simply because I was frustrated with doctor appointments. I said, of course, YES to hypnosis and guided imagery. I have been practicing hypnotherapy for 30 years and it is such a big part of me. The difference is that I allowed other users (my friends) to work with me. I have wonderful CDs to listen to and hypnosis is multifaceted in that I can work on stress, fear, negativity as well as healing, reducing symptoms, and strengthening my health.
My mind was important. I chose a therapist who believes that once the tumor is there, the crisis it caused is over and the healing is underway. I liked it. I have never seen myself sick or unhealthy.
The following articles will tell you how I maintain my strength, my power and my patience. They will discuss different healing methods and how to choose what is right for you. The past six months have been a journey of letting go, relearning what I took for granted, compensation, letting myself be cared for and receiving. I am learning to control my desire to be controlled! This is the hardest job I’ve ever had. As I navigate through life, sometimes I feel like I’m failing and not getting it, and other times I feel very wise and powerful. When friends, family, doctors, people I meet respect me for how I handle it, I just smile quietly inside.
