6 Months Without Sleeping Through the Night

My baby is already 6 months old and I expected him to be able to sleep through the night by now. Unfortunately he still wakes up in the middle of the night, usually 1-2 times. I thought it was because he was hungry, but I’ve been reading a lot about him and I think he’s getting used to falling asleep on the chest.

Apparently we all wake up several times a night, but the difference between babies and us is that babies have to learn how to fall back to sleep on their own. Every baby will be able to handle themselves at a certain point in their life, but, since you never know when it’s going to happen, it can be a good idea to try to teach them as soon as possible you can, or me. they should say it as soon as they can. In my case, my baby uses the breast to put himself back to sleep and my mission now is to teach him how to go back to sleep on his own.

The first thing I plan to do is take a close look at my baby’s sleeping habits; what time he wakes up, when his naps are and how long and what times he wakes up during the night. This way I will have a better idea of his sleep pattern.

My baby’s bed routine is bath, read and feed before going to bed and he usually falls asleep at the breast. I have decided to change this habit because it reinforces his dependence on falling asleep on the breast. His new bed routine will be: feeding, bathing and reading before bed. Putting the baby in the cot while he is awake will help him learn how to fall asleep on his own.

The next question is, what do I do next? I have spoken to many mothers and each one has a different opinion on the best way to go about it. I think, as with many things in parenting, it’s a very personal decision, and even if there is a right one, it would be almost impossible to know which one it is.

Method “Let your baby sleep himself.” I’m not a fan of this “method”, it’s basically letting your baby cry until he falls asleep. It might work for certain parents, but I find it unnecessarily cruel.

Another method called “Ferberizing”, is named for the person who proposed it: Dr. Richard Ferber. You put your baby to sleep and if he cries, you leave him alone for 5 minutes, enter the room after that time has passed, pat him and leave the room – again. The next time you let him cry for 10 minutes and continue that procedure increasing the time you let him cry by 5 minutes until he falls asleep. I don’t like to leave my baby crying, I know some people might think I’m a weak mother and that the baby controls me, but I don’t think so it is fair to him. Crying is the only way he can communicate with us and if we ignore him when he does, what kind of message are we sending him?

There is another method called “systemic awakening”. It doesn’t sound like much fun, but at least it allows you to leave your baby crying for hours. First you need to keep a diary with the times your baby wakes up during the night for a week. Once you have an idea of your baby’s routine you need to set an alarm for about half an hour before you expect him to wake up. As soon as the alarm goes off, you get up (this is the “not much fun” part) and you have to wake up the baby (this is the “even less fun” part) and do what you as usual when he wakes up spontaneously. Waking it up? Poor little thing, really? he looks so peaceful when he’s sleeping, I don’t know if I could do it. For those who can, you must expect each normal awakening in the same way and gradually extend the time between the awakenings. This way, within a few weeks, you will be able to eliminate them.

So, after considering the different options, I’m going to try the method of simply reinforcing sleep rhythms. The main thing with this method is that you don’t let your baby get too tired. I have seen my baby tired many times and he acts like he is ready to party all night (my partner loves it because he really thinks he wants to play) when he was ready to go to bed a few hours ago. This method says that when you can expect your baby’s natural quietness and let him sleep in the right environment (in my case that means sleeping in his cot and not ‘ disturb him) he falls asleep easily. One thing I need to change is my attitude to my baby’s night wakings, instead of feeding him I will give him a response to give reassurance, but I will let him fall asleep on his own .

Good night and sleep tight
