Children’s Dental Health – 5 Tips for Avoiding Cavities

Babies have twenty primary teeth at birth, also known as baby teeth. Primary teeth begin to erupt at about 6 months of age and usually appear by age 3. It is important to take your child to the dentist by age one so that the dentist can examine to do on your child for the risk of decay and to educate you about the latest preventive care. Below are 5 tips for avoiding caves:

  1. Brush twice a day. Children over 3 should brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Children under the age of 3 should use non-fluoridated baby toothpaste until they are old enough to discard toothpaste containing fluoride. Encourage and encourage your child to brush their teeth by making it fun. Let them choose a toothbrush with their favorite color or character on it. Some children do a more effective job of cleaning their teeth with the help of an electric toothbrush. The novelty of an electric toothbrush can encourage your child to brush more often. Create a brushing habit by having your child brush first, then take turns with you. Use a gentle circular motion as you move the toothbrush around one or two teeth at a time. Change your toothbrush every three months because old bristles don’t clean well below the gum line and host more plaque and disease-causing bacteria.

  2. Floss every day. Start brushing when your child is around 2 to 3 years old. Children usually need help with flossing until they are 8 to 10 years old. Flossing helps remove debris on teeth and gums between teeth, polish tooth surfaces and control bad breath. Flossing is most effective when done at least once a day for 2 to 3 minutes each time.

  3. Schedule regular dental checkups. Experts recommend that children begin regular dental checkups starting at 12 months of age. Their teeth should be checked twice a year for signs of tooth decay, gum disease and other health problems.

  4. Eat nutritious foods. What your child eats, and how often they eat, has a huge impact on their oral and general health. Eating foods high in sugar or starch feeds the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Encourage healthy eating habits in childhood and teenage years to promote optimal health, growth and intellectual development into adulthood.

  5. Put sealants on teeth. Dental sealants are thin, plastic films painted on the chewing surfaces of back teeth that host food debris and plaque buildup. They are very effective in preventing tooth decay. In fact, research has shown that sealants actually stop cavities when placed on top of a slightly decayed tooth because it seals off the supply of nutrients to the bacteria that cause the cavity. Sealants are especially beneficial for children because their newly erupted permanent teeth are more prone to cavities, but patients of all ages can benefit from dental sealants.
