Mandy Mac Modern Cloth Nappies

My little girl is growing up now so she is moving out of nappies and into her toilet training pants. For me, it’s with a certain sense of sadness that I will no longer need our wonderful Mandy Mac nappies (well at least until number two graces us!)

You may be wondering why I am writing about worms today since I have previously advocated for Natural Baby Hygiene. I still think Natural Baby Hygiene is the way to go, but it also works better if you start from birth. Which I didn’t do because I didn’t find out about it until my daughter was already six months old. We are doing well together at Natural Infant Hygiene though, which is why she is moving from full time nappies to part time nappies as she is already using the toilet to successful for most of her eliminations at twelve months. When baby number two graces us I will use my Mandy Mac clips while learning the weaning and outing sounds.

So why do I think Mandy Mac’s new outfit is the bomb?

1. The Design

They are one size fits all with an inner lining to catch solid waste. Made from a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend they fit all baby sizes from birth to standard Western toilet training age. The shape is almost identical to the shape of a disposable napkin making it easy for people to work out. You put the clasp on, pull the front up over the baby’s crotch and fasten the sides with a snappy elastic clip, or with pins.

Another good thing about the design is that they are not waterproof. Now you might think that a bell that needs an extra PUL cover would be more trouble than it’s worth but it’s not. The main idea behind today’s cloth nappies is to change them when they are wet and not let your child sit around in his dirty diapers until he is “full”. you would do with a frivolous fly. If you use today’s bell your baby will feel wet and will generally be unhappy with this feeling. It lets you know that it needs a change and this serves two major purposes. First of all, it is rare for a baby to get a new clothes bells rash. His bottom is kept clean and dry and does not stay in contact with his litter. He may still get the odd tooth rash but this has nothing to do with the cleanliness of his tricks. Second, you can toilet train earlier because the child does not like to feel wet. This helps with Natural Baby Hygiene as well as standard Western toilet training, because even when you are conventionally training a baby, it is often recommended that you switch to a cloth device just for this purpose.

Also, not using a PUL cover while at home will allow your clothes to breathe more than a nappy, and will further promote a hygienic environment for your baby’s bottom.

However, by using the PUL cover over the Mandy Mac nappy you can then go out with confidence that your baby’s ear will not get full and create a lunch where he sits, so you can access it changing room to change. it again. PUL is more breathable than plastic wrap.

2. The Fabrics

They are made from either a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend.

Bamboo is soft, delicate and very absorbent. It is a beautiful fabric to use, and if you only have one child, this is a great choice. With high absorption it can take longer to dry these nappies especially if you live in a wet and cold area.

Hemp lasts well and dries faster but can feel a little scratchy at times. This is not really a problem because the baby’s body does not come into contact with the hemp itself, the baby’s body comes into contact with the built-in liner, so there is no texture a little harder in a hemp nap than a case. In addition, hemp is very stable so depending on projected use you may need to use the hemp ones if you are going to pass them down through children afterwards.

Mandy Mac has some great night nappies called “Purple Nights”. So called because the inner lining is a beautiful royal purple color. They are bamboo which makes them very absorbent, and with twenty two layers of bamboo your baby can go all night without changing bells. Best used when the baby sleeps through the night and no longer wakes up to feed in the middle of the night. I have three. One to use, one in the wash and one on the line.

3. Ethics

Not only are Mandy Mac’s innovative clothing lines eco-friendly, they are made under fair trade working environments. The people who make the noodles receive fair pay, excellent benefits for themselves and their communities in exchange for their work.

So how many new cloth napkins would you need to get started?

For a newborn baby you can expect, until he settles into a comfortable feeding and sleeping pattern, you may need about 8 to 10 nappies a day, especially if he is a breastfed baby. Don’t worry, it won’t take long for your newborn to settle into a routine he’s comfortable with and you can start to reduce the number of naps needed because you can predict how often it needs to change.

For a 3 – 6 month old baby you may need about six to eight per day.

For a baby 6 – 18 months you may need about six a day and Purple Nights for nighttime use.

I bought 14 Mandy Macs, 3 Snappies, 3 PUL covers and 3 Purple Nights. I also use two pre-folded cotton cups if it’s raining and the wash hasn’t dried in time! You can use a dryer for your new clothes clips, I just choose not to for environmental reasons.

Where did I buy them from?

You can get them from Mandy Mac herself but I bought mine from a fair trade baby shop in Canberra called Brindabella Baby. Now, I have no financial connection to Brindabella Baby, I just think that a baby shop with a fair trade focus is a great idea and should be encouraged. At the time of writing they have a six-pack of Mandy Mac Hemp for a very reasonable price and reckon you could save thousands of dollars choosing modern fabric over lifetime disposables. They also offer a 9 month layover so you can pay your investment in installments during your pregnancy.

So, Mandy Mac, they are the ones for me and my babies. What will you choose for yourself?
