8 Secrets to Reduce Stress

The last post dealt with taking responsibility for our health. It is a concept that is uniquely foreign to millions in the United States, but it is a very simple concept. It comes down to two factors:

1.) Getting rid of stress

2.) Making better lifestyle choices

They sound simple and easy on paper, or on the computer screen, but there is more to it than just words. Today we look at the first part of that responsibility equation, eliminating responsibility

The Truth About Stress

Stress is an idea, plain and simple. You can’t pull weight out of thin air on a windy day. You can’t stress eat a greasy taco from Rolberto’s Taco Shack. Stress is not going to bite you on the nose and trap you.

You are all stressed. Or me.

That’s how we see things. Remember the old saying that life is “10% what happens to us and 90% how we handle it.” We all experience ups and downs. The problem is that in our society, with all the talk of war, economic disparity, health insurance woes, and political unrest, the downs seem to outnumber the downs. promotions. Add in a stressful job, a relationship on the rocks, or car trouble (my personal nightmare), and it can add up to serious stress.

Our bodies were designed to handle stress in small amounts, which is “fight or flight.” If a hungry lion is stalking you, or you’re walking around the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, TX at midnight, you either turn and run or you stay and protect yourself . The truly amazing thing is that the human body can instantly move itself to make fight or flight possible. Here’s how:

Pupils dilated– giving us the ability to take in more of our surroundings.

Heart beating– sending more blood than usual to the muscles so we can move faster.

Cold skin, sweat and pale face– because all the blood is sent to the muscles.

Breathe fast, deep– sending more oxygen to the muscles, so they can work longer.

Decreased digestion– blood is diverted from the GI system to the muscles in the arms and legs. By digging that pizza can wait!

Increased release of epinephrine and norepinephrine– gives us that “adrenaline boost” to sprint or hit!

But what happens when, instead of a lion, there are years of arguing and fighting in a marriage, or when we work 70 hours a week for years at a high-stress job? Suddenly, you don’t want your pupils dilating all the time, or adrenaline going through your body.

Ultimately, these stress reactions will lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, and/or a whole list of diseases too extensive to mention here.

The Eight Mysteries

The key is to know that stress is a response, both emotionally and physically, and not something that happens to us because fate deems it so.

What if the situation you’re in is just too difficult for you to shrug your shoulders and say “Whatever happens, happens?” I have been through chiropractic school and done several tests. I had to find a way to make student loans last four months at a time and support a wife and three children. We all have different situations that may bother us from time to time. We also have the ability to do certain things to reduce the stress we may feel.

1.) Get Special Chiropractic Adjustments-Stress is one of the main starting causes, if not the main cause, of vertebral subluxation. A subluxation of the upper cervical spine can make a person’s life miserable if not corrected. Over time, a subluxation can add significantly to someone’s weight. If someone is experiencing unhappiness and it interferes with their daily work, the added stress will only make this vicious cycle worse. So first things first – get your upper cervical spine checked for subluxation, and if you have one, get it corrected immediately.

2.) Exercise– For me, intense exercise is just the cure for a stressful day. Whether it’s a 3 mile run, several body weight exercises, or a weight lifting session, I always feel better. Exercise releases neurotransmitters throughout our body that help us feel great. Not to mention, if you work out regularly, the changes you see in the mirror will start to give you some confidence and boost your self-esteem.

3.) Think– Some meditate by singing. Some meditate by sitting still and clearing their mind of all thoughts. Others meditate by praying. Whatever type of meditation you do, do it in a quiet place for about 20-30 minutes. You will have more sanity to effectively handle the stress you may face that day. In my experience, early morning around 4-5am is the best time to meditate. But getting up early means you need more of #4.

4.) Sleep- Ah, sleep. Such a precious commodity, at least it is in my home. With small children in the house, this is not always possible in the way my wife and I would like. But unless you have small children, there is no excuse for getting to bed early. As the old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise will make you healthy, rich, and wise.” If you turn off the lights before 10pm every night, eventually you won’t need an alarm. You will get a deep, restful sleep and automatically wake up around 4-5am, 6am at the latest. If you are well rested, things do not come to you as much, and your brain is better equipped to deal logically with problems that may arise during your day.

5.) Get Organized- Get your life in order and it will be one less thing to worry about. Get a daily planner, or if you’re digitally minded, a PDA, and organize your days and weeks. Get a file cabinet and put in all your important documents like bills, receipts and personal records. Back up all the work you do on a computer onto CDs in case your computer crashes. Doing all this will give you peace of mind and keep you from worrying about finding time for everything.

6.) Be on Time Leave early. Try to get anywhere you need to be 15 minutes early. This was a big one for me. I was always late for years. I always aimed to get to work, school or church right when I was supposed to be there. And there is a chance that I never got there when I was supposed to get there. Leaving early gives you time to drive stress-free, even if the highway is congested. You don’t have to lie on the horn while crouching while you cry and scream at the top of your lungs at the rubber in front of you. It allows you to walk into work or school peacefully and organize your things for the day without running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

7.) Stop watching the News- News channels spend their money raising public fears. You never see good news, especially because it doesn’t make money. You don’t hear about the thousands of planes that have landed safely around the world every day. You hear about the hit man. You hear about the pilots, the passengers, the crash site, etc. over and over again until the next crash occurs somewhere else. Sex sells, so there’s bad news. If you want to reduce your weight, stop looking at this garbage. I’m not saying hide in a cave, but just be selective and short with what you want to pursue. You don’t always need the details.

8.) Have sex- You may be reading this last one with a dirty minded smirk, but the truth is I wouldn’t be saying this if more than 50% of marriages fail these days. And of the marriages that do not fail, many of them are not happy unions. Talk about stress! I’m not talking about going out to the club and taking home whoever comes along. I’m talking about being in a healthy, monogamous relationship where two people love each other. When you love your partner, it makes for much better sex, and you’re likely to have it more often. It’s hard to be stressed if you have a good sex life!

If you sit down and make a goal to do each of these things, I can promise you that your stress will decrease significantly, maybe even disappear. But as I said before, it won’t be easy. You have to do the action, not just once, but every day, again and again.
