16 Essential Oils For Your Dog

Essential oils are able to produce the desired result faster than herbs. A drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 26 tea cups of pepper. Essential oils have multiple effects where many drugs usually have only one medical property and negative side effects.

Some health care professionals do not recommend putting essential oils on their paws. Pets lick their feet and this can cause irritation as saliva is similar to water. Essential oil penetrates the skin quickly. Compounds such as fertilizers, antifreeze and other pesticides may be absorbed more quickly when essential oils are applied to their paws.

I have taken advice from Dr. Nancy Brandt, DVM and used the knowledge in my dog breeding business. She is a holistic veterinarian located in Las Vegas, NV and uses Young Living essential oils in her practice. Most essential oils should be diluted with a base or carrier oil before applying to your pet. For dogs, the recommendation is 1 drop of essential oil to 10 drops of base/carrier oil and for cats, rabbits and ferrets, 1 drop of essential oil to 25 drops of base/carrier oil. You can listen to Dr. Brandt’s 1/29/2009 lecture on the Internet covering 16 Young Living essential oils every pet owner should have.

In my opinion, the best base or carrier oil is organic cold-pressed olive oil, grape seed oil or fractionated coconut oil. Avoid nut oils if your pet is allergic to nuts. I recommend using Young Living’s V-6 enhanced vegetable oil base as a base/carrier oil. The ingredients of V-6 are Fractionated Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, and Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil. Cold pressed olive oil and grapeseed oil are other options to use as a base/carrier oil.

Oil and water do not mix; water causes the oil to irritate your pet’s skin. If your pet is sensitive to any essential oil, dilute the oil with a base/carrier oil or add more base/carrier oil where you applied the essential oil. If any essential oil gets into your pet’s eyes wash it out with base/carrier oil, not water.

I chose essential oils made by Young Living. They are therapeutic grade and properly processed. They are organic and do not contain pesticides, such as pesticides. Not all essential oils can be taken internally. Young Living essential oils are one of the few essential oils that can be safely taken internally. There are 42 species of incense but Young Living chooses the 2 species with the most therapeutic benefits not the cheapest to produce and process. The oils are processed at low heat by steam distillation or cold pressing. This makes more of the natural properties available. Some essential oil brands process their products with higher heat and as a result their essential oils do not have all the properties and may contain toxins. They cost less and are less efficient.

The essential oil Balsam fir (Idaho) is anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant (stops blood from bleeding) and works like cortisone. It is used for respiratory issues and pain. For breathing issues touch the chest. For pain issues, touch the source. I spread it in my can if I see or hear signs of a cold or cough. You can combine 2-3 essential oils and diffuse them to get the desired results.

Eucalyptus Radiata can be used as a smelling salt and helps to open the lungs when an upper respiratory infection is present. Its medical properties are antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. As a smell of salt the bottle is held briefly under the nose. For breathing issues, touch the chest. I use eucalyptus on my dogs collars and it works as an insect repellant. I spray eucalyptus on my baseball cap while fishing and the bugs leave me alone.

Frankincense can cross the blood/brain barrier and help increase oxygen to the brain. Frankincense is used for infections and tumors, dissolving lumps and bumps. Frankincense is antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. It can be applied topically, diffused, or simply inhaled. I have applied frankincense to bumps on my pets and the size of the lump decreases quickly.

Helichysum is good for bruising or bleeding. I use it for when droopy paws are removed or when tails are docked. It speeds up the healing process. This essential oil is not diluted but rubbed directly on the bare abdomen, be sure to avoid the sexual organs. Apply 1 drop per 1 inch of bare belly up the center of the pet’s belly. The medical properties of Helichrysum are anticoagulant, anesthetic, antispasmodic, antiviral, liver detoxifier; chelates chemicals and toxins and regenerates nerves. Choose Helichysum if rat poison is suspected. This will help control internal bleeding during your trip to the vet.

Lavender is the most universal essential oil and can be used for almost anything. This essential oil is used neat (not dried). Lavender is good for healing burns including sunburn. Lavender has a calming effect. Here’s a recipe that can be smoked into the air: add 2 drops to 1 oz. steam distilled water put into a spray bottle, shaken before each use. Its medical properties are antiseptic, antifungal, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reducing blood fat/cholesterol, and combating excess sebum on skin. I use lavender to clean tear staining on my puppies while they are teething. Apply only once a day apply one drop to your finger and rub it over the nose and under the eyes (avoid the eyes). I like to use it at night because lavender has calming properties.

Peppermint is wonderful for treating diarrhea and vomiting. Be sure to dilute with the base/carrier oil formula. The medical properties of peppermint are anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antiparasitic (worms), antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, gallbladder/digestive stimulant, and pain reliever and help reduce appetite. I use dried peppermint and rub it on the gums or stomach to stop the diarrhea.

Pine works for respiratory issues and it works even better when mixed with eucalyptus. This is a great mix to wear during the winter months and it smells great. Or it can be touched on the chest between the front legs. Pine’s medical properties are hormone-like, antidiabetic, cortisone-like, antiseptic and lymphatic stimulant.

An essential oil blend is a combination of several essential oils that have a wider spectrum of beneficial medical properties. Di-Gize helps reduce diarrhea and vomiting. It works better than peppermint. Put the oil on the bare abdomen and rub it in a clockwise motion, as the colon moves. Egyptian gold supports the immune system and is used for open wounds (dog/cat fights). It is added to the chest and between the shoulder blades on the back. Joy helps the heart and circulatory system. Apply on the chest and side of the ribs. GLF should be used if your pet ingests anything toxic such as fertilizer or advertising. Rub on the liver. The liver is located just below the ribs on the right. Melrose is excellent for chronic infections such as abscesses (sores) that are difficult to heal. Panaway is for dog bites, bruises, cuts and scrapes. Purification without mitigation is used for insect bites. It cleans the air and kills the virus, Parvo. It balances electro energies. Use it on your pet’s bed as a diffuser. Mix 1 drop to 1 oz of steam distilled water into a spray bottle. Shake before use and spray the room, bed, and toys anything your pet touches to disinfect it. I recommend this as a must for my customers if they plan to board their pets to keep their pet germ free. Thieves kill bacteria and can be used as a natural antibiotic. Flossers should be used to keep your pet’s teeth clean. This is a healthier option then taking your pet to the vet to have their teeth cleaned. Put a drop on your finger and rub your pet’s upper gums once a week or daily if you find issues. Thieves is not recommended for use on cats due to their sensitivity to the liver. Valor is chiropractic in a bottle. It detoxifies the body by balancing energy centers (chakras). Enter the spine. This is a wonderful essential oil blend for pets that lead active lifestyles such as hunting or testing.
