Ocean Sport Fishing – A Great Quality Time Family Hobby

The beauty of our world’s oceans is indescribable for most. Words like splendor and majesty can only touch the surface, it is to know ways to engage in one moments when we really appreciate its wonders. It is a complex field of discovery that offers many opportunities to learn, and with that learning, an opportunity to share with others. No place on this earth can be seen as the seas are more beautiful, but fierce, wide and wonderful like the seas. As a young child I was drawn to him like a magnet to iron. I still remember going to the beach for the first time. It became an adventure for me that day, and I have sought ways to enjoy it throughout my life.

My father had a gift for drawing the interest of his children into his hobbies. He loved sport fishing of all kinds; he preferred both ocean and fresh water fishing. Because he shared this with all his children, we developed a strong bond, both with him and with the recreational activity of sport fishing itself. From the age of six or seven until I was a teenager, we enjoyed fishing together many times.

We made special trips just to fish for species that feed best at night; when the temperature of the water was right, or the moon was in the right phase, whatever it was teaching us. Finally we got away to sport fishing in ocean waters: when I was thirteen years old I went on my first ocean fishing trip with my father. This became one of my interests in life, many of which were gifts of knowledge and learning through it.

My first sport fishing trip on the ocean came in the mid-summer of 1967; my father told me and my brother Steafan that he was taking us with him the following Saturday night. As this was Tuesday, we could not sleep at night for the rest of the week. Our heads were full of wonder about the possibilities, and ideas of what it would be like. We had been on small boats many times, but never a boat as big as the sport fishing boats that dad used to go out with his friends. He always brought back big fish: Albacore, Yellowtail, Rock Cod, Calico Bass, Barracuda, Ling Cod, you name it. We were excited, and we couldn’t wait for Saturday to come, we knew that big hugs were coming our way too.

Saturday didn’t come too soon for us. We were to leave that night at 11:00 pm, for a day trip to the Coronado Islands off the coast of Southern California. We went on to the fishing grounds of the outer bank; there was an El Nino current, and large schools of Tuna were coming in rather close to the islands. Dad was all smiles; you could see he was proud to take us on this special trip. He had two friends coming too, and they were making fun of me and my brother endlessly about these fish shaking our hips and so on. That just made us more eager to get on with it. The thought of fish fighting so hard gave us more energy. There were plenty of sights on this day.

We went to Pacific Landing in Long Beach, California, after stopping to buy a special dad attraction that was needed for our kids. Walking inside the landing office was interesting in itself, the sights and smells were interesting and fun. The walls were covered with taxi awards, one for a ‘Black Sea Bass’, with a Cuban cigar in his mouth and it made us even more excited. The boats out there were between 85′ to 110′ long, painted blue and white and looked like floating heaven. We rented the appropriate fishing rods and reels for me and my brother. Dad helped us choose the right fishing gear and leaders needed for big game fish. Finally, we got new gunny sacks to keep our catch in, and we went on board the boat.

The boat left at 11:00 as planned. Me and my brother were in seventh heaven. There wasn’t a place on board that we didn’t find our way into. The captain let us into the pilot house, and we were amazed by the controls, radar, sonar fish finders, and the compass and radio system. Skip talked to us about everything, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Finally we went to the bottom room and fell into a restless sleep. The sound of banging on the deck woke us up the next morning. People were shouting loudly and from the sound, big fish were hitting the deck with their strong tails. It was like nothing we had ever heard before, but me and Steven knew it was a jackpot moment. We excitedly headed for the upper deck and our fishing poles.

When we got on deck it was 8:30 am and Hugh’s fish was hitting the deck right in front of our eyes. The deckhand, ‘Whitey’ had just removed the fly after pulling the fish out of the water for the angler who had caught it. It was a 12-16 lb Yellowtail, and on the decks everyone seemed to be hooked. Poles were bent everywhere and there were smiles on everyone’s faces, including ours. We moved as fast as we could to retrieve our poles, which had been tied with 8″ Blue and White Apollo Jigs the night before. Jocko, a friend of my fathers saw us and called us over seeing him. He was laughing at us. and joking that we weren’t good fishermen if we didn’t get our line wet the same minute.

I had a good experience throwing a normal crow, and he was very good at it. My brother Steve wasn’t very slow either, we set out for a good distance. Fish were literally boiling in the water. You could see them breaking the surface, and just below feeding on it so that they were thrown by the decks. I started to retrieve my Jig right after it hit water. I wanted to keep it on the surface, or just below it, because the fish were right there. By my third cast, I got a hook that doubled my rod over. Line was slipping off my reel, so I adjusted my drag a little tighter. Still the line kept going and I didn’t know what to do. My dad showed up right about then and told me to tighten the pull a little more and let the fish head. Meaning let it run for a minute. I did as I was asked, surprised by the power I felt pulling on my rod. I had caught big fish before, but nothing like this.

As the fish ran, it changed direction several times. Once towards the boat, making my line go slow, and once towards the bow. I had been here about ten minutes, pulling in as fast as I could, and alternately walking along the railway of the guns as the fish took me for a walk. Dad was right there encouraging me, Jocko and his friend Claude were dragging me along and predicting that the fish would sweep my buck, all in fun. I was very tired, my arms were locked from holding weight and tension for about 20 minutes already, but I could tell that the fish was getting weaker all the time. I would get him where he could see a struggle, and he would run full steam again, twice right under the boat. Finally, I got him to the side of the boat where Whitey could catch him.

This was a “Bigeye Tuna” he said, and it’s going to weigh around eighty pounds. I couldn’t believe how big he was when he was dragged on deck. he hit him on the deck, hit him hard with his tail for about one minute, and Whitey hit him on the top of the head with a ‘Louisville Slugger’, just to take him down. Steafan, my brother had caught two Yellowtail, averaging about 14-20 lbs each, and his Jig was back in the water. I didn’t get the Jackpot money, because I didn’t get in the Jackpot the night before, my Bigeye weighed in at 86 pounds 14 ounces, the biggest fish ever boarded that day He filled the bathtub from end to end, when we were His tail stuck out of the end of the bathtub about eight inches, it was big.

We fished all morning and early afternoon. I caught a bag full of Yellowtail and Albacore, and a few Barracuda to boot. They seem to run in packs together. That was a great first time. My father knew we were going to catch fish, that’s why he took us. He explained later that he hadn’t taken us with us before because he didn’t think we could land a big fish yet. Well, of course I said I was ready by this time. He just smiled at me and rubbed my swollen head.

It’s moments like these that children remember forever. It is moments like these that create a bond with nature, and parents. I have never forgotten a moment of this trip. It happened many years ago, and was followed by many solo trips, trips with my friend John Hogan, and my sister Charlene. After this trip, my father would give me twenty bucks so I could hit the fishing boats by myself, or with a friend. That’s why I’m sharing this now. You can never have a better time to share with your children than outdoor activities. It is very important to spend physical time together in a quality way, sharing and learning together.

This is sport fishing as a hobby. Try this at home, it works!
