Baby Growth and Development
When a child is born, it has no concept of night and day. Babies sleep, on average, about seventeen hours a day, but in a series of short naps. These movements usually last from two to four hours. They cannot sleep for a long time, as adults do, because they often have to be fed and diaper changed in the middle of the night. To help your baby get used to sleeping more at night, keep the room where the baby sleeps brightly lit during the day, but not in direct and dark light at night. You can also establish bedtime routines, such as bathing and feeding right before bedtime and playing soothing music to help baby fall asleep.
Babies are born with reflexes that help protect them after birth. For example, touch the child’s cheek with the tip of your finger or your breast, the child will turn to the source and open his mouth. Place your finger in the palm of his hand and the child will grasp it. These reflexes last only a few months and are then replaced by voluntary movements. Breastfeeding is the best way to feed a newborn. Breast milk contains various nutrients that help the child’s development and antibodies that help fight infections. Breastfeeding makes the baby’s immune system stronger. Swallowing is a common problem associated with breastfeeding. It causes the breasts to become hard and heavy. Expressing a little milk before each feeding will help to solve this problem. Sore nipples are a sign that the baby is not progressing properly. Make sure that the child takes the areola in his mouth together with the nipple itself, or milk will not express properly, causing the child to want to suck more difficult. This causes pain to the mother and frustration to the child.
The development of the child is very fast. Babies double their birth weight in the first six months of life and triple their birth weight in the first year. After the first year, a child’s growth pattern starts to slow down a bit. The average child at one year is about thirty inches and twenty one pounds. The average height and weight of a two-year-old child is about thirty-three inches and twenty-six pounds. By just three months old, the baby should be able to hold his head up when placed on his stomach for a few seconds. Baby can try to swipe at or grab toys hanging above them and loves learning faces. He/she turns his/her head when spoken to, listens to voices and is startled by loud noises. When the child is six months old, he/she develops control over their body. The child will be able to sit with help and maybe even on his own for a short time. He/she starts reaching out when he/she wants to be held. The child will be able to roll over. The baby will be able to hold his own toys and bottles and babble happily or scream in frustration.
At nine months of age, the child should be able to sit alone, unaided and may be able to pull himself up on furniture. The baby will be able to use his fingers to point and grasp small objects and feed himself finger food. You will notice a pattern in his/her handwriting, as if it were a foreign language.
At one year, the child may be able to walk and stand without assistance. He/she may be able to crawl up the stairs and out of his crib or playpen. The child prefers to use one hand over the other. The child becomes afraid or observant of strangers and will be able to express feelings, love and will be able to solve simple problems.
