How to Handle a Defiant Child – Ages 3 to 6
A child who is only naughty can make you feel like you have given birth to the devil incarnate. So how do you handle a child who is rude to adults, who throws constant tantrums? Well with a younger child between the ages of 3 to 6 you can hopefully change their behavior.
First you need to make sure you are clear about your rules and follow through on the consequences. Many parents when they influence a child decide not to follow through for as long as necessary. Say your youngster, who is 4 years old has decided to throw a suit in the middle of a store. You tell that child you won’t get candy by crying and throwing yourself on the floor. If you walk with me and help me choose things (without whistling, or waving) you can choose one candy at the end.
Give them only three chances to earn the candy. If they can’t keep it together for that trip, they can always try again next time. Just make sure that if they do an action after three chances are given the child is not allowed to get the candy. Children often manipulate and bully their parents to get the child’s way. Don’t let this happen.
As challenging children realize that you have become tougher and can’t get away with being bad, they will begin to change. Remember that this suggestion may not help for the next 3 trips to the grocery store. However, when you put it, it will begin to affect the child’s behavior and they will begin to obey in the future.
Don’t be put off by the idea of taking a child in to see a mental health professional, there may be a reason that only the specialist will be able to find out about your child’s behavior. With you sticking to consequences, and a therapist helping your child with their behavior you should see improvement. But again you have to remember that it won’t be an instant change.
