10 Things I Discovered About the Mayan Alux in Mexico’s Riviera Maya

I just got back from spending a month on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It was a great trip and I found myself exploring some interesting things while I was there.

Call of tiny people Aluxob (the singular Alux) lives in the jungles and cenotes of the Yucatan. Do you think I’m talking about an old tradition? I’m not so sure…

I had a few personal experiences with one about 4 years ago in my home Puerto Aventuras (a beach town in the Riviera Maya) and I wanted to delve into the experience a little deeper. So I interviewed local Maya to see what they had to say.

Let me tell you my experience first:

I lived in a nice condo on the ocean and my daughter, Sarah, and her Mexican boyfriend, Javier, lived with me. Strange things were happening in the house.

  • In the middle of the night, I again heard someone yelling my name right in my ear and it woke me up and practically put me through the roof. Sarah and Javier experienced the same thing.

  • The blender and other small appliances turned on in the middle of the night.

  • As I was walking down the hall, I would feel a slap on my leg just above the ankle.

It was all weird, but not too bad (Except for flying out of bed to turn off the blender in the middle of the night. I hate that adrenaline rush.) the children getting to know everything I was and several times Javier said, “You’re on the alux.”

Of course I didn’t take it seriously.

Until the footprints appeared in the hall.

This hallway led to my daughter’s room. My bedroom was on the other side of the house. When I got up early one morning and walked past it, I saw water on the floor all the way down to my daughter’s bedroom. I thought Sarah had taken a shower and was bleeding all the way down the hall. The floors can be very slippery, so I started to remind us not to pour water everywhere, but as soon as I entered the hall I saw that it was not it was just dripping water, it was tiny footprints.

“I told you, the alux,” Javier said.

all right. i believed

Later I went to my close friend, Crescent. She is from Canada and she also lived in the Riviera Maya in Mexico with her Mayan husband. They have a dive shop. I asked Crescent if she knew about it alux. She said that she only did that she would ask her husband, William.

“Oh yes,” (Imagine hearing this in a catchy way) said William.

And then he went on to tell how the fishermen saw the tiny footprints on their boats early in the morning. Mind you, I hadn’t mentioned the wet footprints in my hallway.

all right. So now I’m sure it is alux he is a real creature, not just a myth. But what exactly is it alux?

Enter this last visit and many interviews.

I found out when I first asked the locals if they knew about it alux, they were hesitant to say one thing. But after I shared my story, they became animated and very open. Some shared their own stories and some thanked me for sharing mine. Apparently, even sharing stories is considered noble and I was delighted to be a part of that. Also, I want to note that I had these conversations in Spanish. Most of these people speak Maya. They all work every day in Spanish, and most of them do not speak much English. Speaking in Spanish, I believe, comforted them and encouraged them to share more freely.

Things I found:

1. Alux live throughout the peninsula, but mostly in the jungle. Not so many live in tourist areas than Quintana Roo by the beach (commonly known as the Riviera Maya). The farms and old towns in the interior state of Yucatan are numerous with them. They are considered as the guardians of the jungle.

2. They are small people, about 18 inches tall. I have read online about their ability to turn into animals, but the locals have not confirmed this. They said, however, that they hide in the rocks and cenotes and some said that they can transform and make themselves appear like rocks.

3. Most of the time they are invisible to us, but sometimes they are caught in their natural form.

4. When asked whether they are spirit or physical, people answered that they were neither. They are ON. This is very interesting and I am currently trying to learn more about it. People also said they are NATURAL or NATURAL. Does this mean they are elemental beings (fire, air, earth, water)? I also heard a story about a human form created from water (called a Cannon Sayab which literally means guardian of the jungle but it is considered the same keeper of the fountains) walking through the ruins at Try. Wow… a lot to find!

5. They like to play. Maya people sometimes find tiny toys left lying around the house. If they are not happy they throw small stones or sometimes hit you.

6. If they are happy, they will protect your home or farm (milpa). They can be very good and helpful if they are properly respected.

7. Farmers build them houses to keep them in their fields. The alux he will protect the four corners of the file and if someone comes to steal anything, they will surround the robber so that he cannot escape.

8. In Costa Rica they are called a song.

9. THE STORY OF KAEL. The city of Cancun was building a new bridge just outside the airport and it kept collapsing. The local Mayans went to the village and told them yes alux. So the town hired a Mayan shaman to contact the alux and find out what to do. The alux he said he wanted a house, so the town built a beautiful house alux a pyramid-shaped house under the bridge. Then they were able to finish the work on the bridge. It still stands today with no problems and the pyramid house is all lit up at night and is beautiful for everyone to see as they exit the airport and- into the beach on vacation.

10. If the alux in your house and you want it to go away, you (or a Mayan shaman, called a J-Man) to perform a ceremony with herbs and plants (I hope to learn more about this) including burning incense made from the resin of the copal tree.

I have more questions about it alux. I have read the dress as the ancient Maya. Some of the people I interviewed have seen them or have stories of family members who have seen them. I forgot to ask what they were wearing, but I’ll go back and see if I can find that. I also want to know more about their nature. What does it mean that they are ATTENTION?

In my interviews, I also heard a story about different creatures called gnomes (pronounced in the Spanish way his name) They were said to be greater than the aluxwith horns, unpleasant nature, carries knives, makes children hurt each other and argue, wears black sombreros, and to be abducted through a ceremony performed including a Bible. I wonder if they are too air or are they earth?

We have a lot to learn.

Cheers

Laura
