Ear Infection Cure – Vitamins and Minerals
One of the fastest ear infection cures is to add some nutritional supplements to your diet. Vitamins and minerals can boost your immunity, relieve your symptoms and stop infection from recurring. I give vitamins and minerals to my patients with ear problems with good results.
Here is a summary of the nutrients I use with my patients:
Ear Infection Cure 1: Vitamin C
I recommend that my adult patients start on at least 3000 – 5000 mg of vitamin C per day to fight infection. In young children (less than 2 years old) 1000 mg per day will be enough. For older children around 2000 mg works well.
Everyone’s requirements for vitamin C are unique, so I recommend that you start taking 500 mg of vitamin C every hour until your stools become slightly watery or loose. When your stools become loose it means that your body is full of vitamin C. Any excess is excreted in the urine and stools. This point is called “gut tolerance” and is when vitamin C helps your immune system to be most effective.
Going directly under your bowel movements should be continued every day until the infection is cleared from your body. Depending on the severity of the infection, this can take anywhere from a day or two to a week or more. If your vitamin C level is too low, you may not see an improvement in your symptoms.
Ear infection remedy 2: zinc
Zinc stimulates your white blood cells and antibody production to fight infections. This mineral is also a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps relieve the pain of sore ears, inflamed throat and swollen glands that are often present with ear problems.
For adults I recommend that you start with 60 – 90 mg of elemental zinc per day. For young children I use 30 mg per day, for older children 60 mg per day. If you also have a sore throat, dissolve a zinc lozenge in your mouth. A sore throat clears up faster when it has direct contact with a sink
Ear infection remedy 3: vitamin A
Vitamin A and the beta-carotene precursor strengthen immunity. Vitamin A has been shown to reduce the rate of infection.
For immune support, I recommend 10,000 IU of vitamin A or 15 mg of beta-carotene per day. For young children about 2500 IU per day, and for older children 5000 IU per day of vitamin A is enough.
Pregnant women should not take vitamin A in large amounts because higher amounts are linked to an increased risk of birth defects.
Other nutrients
Optional but recommended nutrients I give my patients are vitamin E, selenium and the B complex.
Ear infection remedy 4: vitamin E
Vitamin E helps the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant. It is beneficial to both bacteria and viruses. I recommend at least 200 mg per day. If you have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor first.
Ear infection remedy 5: selenium
It is good to take selenium together with vitamin E, because they contribute to the absorption of each other. It is a good immunity booster. For adults take 100 mg per day.
Ear infection therapy 6: B complex
To help repair the nerves in the ears it is advisable to have a balanced B complex. The B vitamins also help you deal with stress and fatigue. 25 – 50 mg B complex per day is a good start.
