Job Search Strategies in a Down Economy

Real times require major steps especially as they relate to job search. Whether it’s your first job, fifth or fifteenth job, there are ways to prepare, actions to take and actions to do that will move the process forward. For some, who are looking at downsizing/layoffs, it may be a shame to be separated from a job and career that was a source of pride, comfort and income as one 45 year old professional said age If you really like your job, your company and your colleagues, it is discouraging and painful to be separated from them.

During the recession of 1982, I co-edited the San Francisco Examiner’s weekly Career Series, one of the first locally produced Career Columns in the US. The only difference between then and now is the internet. We dedicated three years of columns to help people in their career and work changes and searches as well as managing their current career.

People were experiencing layoffs, downsizing, reengineering, mergers and sticky situations with bosses, advisors and colleagues. “Networking” was relatively new. Oh, it’s been around for centuries but there was no formal name attached to that homosexual process of common sense and decency. Now, networking was just a noun and now it’s a verb—an action word!

When I learned about a teacher retiring, my mother said you could “always fall back on”, (so much for that myth), I was frustrated, annoyed and feeling betrayed. What I learned:

  1. It’s okay to take a second off. But give yourself a time allowance to be angry. 10-14 days
  2. It’s okay to be sad because losing a job is a bigger loss than income. 10-14 days
  3. After times for #1 and #2 have passed (and hopefully they happen at the same time), it’s time to take action. My mantra in all my books including Face to face: How to reclaim the personal touch in a digital world, don’t good things come to those who wait. “Good things come to those who start.”
  4. Go to a fundraiserC
  5. Check out MeetUp.com for a local group in your area
  6. Join the BNI group
  7. Visit 40+ or the Job Search Group from your local EDD office.
  8. Attend a Pink Slip Party
  9. Talk to people in lines, next to you at sporting events, in the laundromat, etc.

The theme is that the more visible we are, the more viable we are. The first step is to “work”, in the best possible way, every gathering, event, party with MEETING people and having conversations that build connections. The second is to network like it’s 1989. That doesn’t just mean “finding friends” and being “connected”, it also means being doing the one-on-one follow-up with people you know or have just met.

We have more options than ever to follow: we can text, email, poke, write on a wall and — how’s this for retro thinking — PICK UP THE PHONE! Take a conversation where you can hear tone, pace, inflection and laugh. Too many people are avoiding the phone and losing phone skills. The main problem is that some employers are so full of resumes that they do telephone job interviews first.

We all know that just looking at Want Ads is not enough whether they appear in the local paper, The Wall Street Journal, on a professional website or on Craigslist. Don’t get me wrong, we have to search all avenues and that includes want ads, job boards and websites. People post and advertise jobs in the hope that the dream employee will read the ad and respond.

From the early 1980s, there was knowledge of what was then known as “THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET.” It wasn’t that it was hidden so much as it was verbal… out of the mouths of people we knew who knew about openings at the company or in their positions.

The answer to the dilemma, “How to find the hidden jobs” is the same now as it was 30 years ago: Be visible. Be Successful. NETWORK! At least, that’s how people have learned about job openings for decades even before the term was coined to describe those activities that connect us to other people.

When I ask my audience how many of them have learned about at least one of their jobs through another person, about 80% of the group raises their hand. This is the way the workaday world has always worked. You learn that your company needs another mechanic, tailor, administrative assistant, sheet metal worker, legal consultant and you tell a friend who knows someone who fits the description. Sometimes these jobs are filled through the informal word-of-mouth networking process before they are posted.

Now that the play 9 To 5 has been revived we realize that the workday used to be just that: 9 to 5. Even as it has expanded and spilled over into our personal lives thanks to technology and the increasing number of lines, I would encourage us to use our 5-9 time slot to build that professional job search network .

Point: People refer jobs to people they know or know even though they are nearby who can vouch for that person. Many people (despite sites that build on separation levels 6) are not going to risk their reputation on someone they don’t know. I won’t.

Therefore, it makes sense to be visible in professional and alumni associations, community groups and local organizations. In addition, we have the option to attend meetings and tweets! Mother’s warning: “Go out, you’ll never meet a man sitting at home” is no longer true. We can meet many people online and even become techno friends, a term defined in Friendship by Joseph Epstein. In this down economy, we need to connect in as many ways as possible. Over a drink…well, that’s a good start!
