How Do You Know if a Bike Fit is Right?

This is the second question I get most often, the first being, “I don’t need a bike fit or a new bike, because I fit my bike well.” The question of whether or not a bicycle responds has been asked for decades and at the end of the day, the answer is not entirely in the realm of “art” or “science”. To me, I feel that there is both a science in determining what is right for a person and an art in working with the person to get the desired results. So the answer to the question is, “You don’t know if a bike is right unless you find a better way to find out what is “right”.”

Most bike fitting programs and protocols revolve around an optimal set of sizes and angles derived from a large test group of individuals. The cycling device then tries to detect the vital measurements from the rider and then tries to use the measurements or angles provided in its corresponding system to send these recommended measurements involved in cycling. The term “suitable for a bike” is more appropriate because for most people in the world, they are trying to find the best compromise in comfort and efficiency to use a particular bike .

In the case of one long-distance commuter bike in Copenhagen Denmark, a difference of an inch or two in saddle height probably won’t make much of a difference. The bike will still take you to work. For a 21-year-old professional benchmarking expert, the requirements for accuracy in fitting are increasing but the adaptability of a young body is also very high, so many different settings are going to be fine.

When a 40-year-old woman is switching from running to cycling and wants to do a triathlon, the fit requirement is just as important for the bike racer, with two caveats.

1) A 40 year old woman is not going to ride in the same conditions as a 21 year old full time bike racer. The range of applicability shrinks every year. Not only that, injuries and conditions such as scoliosis make the range even narrower.

2) Many people who are really getting into cycling as adults have no idea what a good bike feels like because they have never experienced it.

My example for this situation is as follows: Molly is 6 years old and in first grade. She has trouble reading the letters and words on the blackboard and the other people in the class are not. What Molly doesn’t know is that she needs glasses and the others don’t. Molly believes that there is some other reason for her problem because she has never considered the possibility that she cannot see as well as others. In other words, Molly thinks she sees just fine!

I recently wrote about the relative difficulty of fitting someone professionally and correctly for a bike and I’m still surprised that getting things perfect after all these years is no easy task. . This explains why so many people who are “fitted” by their local bike shops think they are getting the best, because that is what they know. It’s not just recreational athletes who struggle with bike fit, either. Many of the professional athletes I run into have terrible posture on their bike. They are so talented that they get by despite that and in fact, they are trained not to complain about discomfort.

So while the question of whether or not a bike fits isn’t easy to answer, here are some things to think about the next time you ride to help you decide what’s right. and what not.

1) Do you have saddle pain, especially in the front of the saddle?

2) Do you get low back, shoulder or neck pain?

3) Are your hands getting slimy? What about your feet?

4) When you take your hands off the handlebars while riding, do you tend to want to slide forward?

5) Is it hard to see when you ride with your hands in the drops?

6) Do you get pain in your knees, especially in the front?

7) Are you constantly pushing back in the saddle to find a comfortable position only to slide forward?

8) Is your bike unstable in the corners or on the way down?

All of these things are signs of a less-than-optimal bike setup. I encourage you to question whether your bike is right for you, rather than whether you are right for the bike. I think you are the most important part of the equation and if you ride, your time is worth more than even the most expensive bike in the world. You can have a comfortable, safe and exciting time on a bike, every time.
