To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter Summary – Chapter 1
Setting:
In chapter 1, Scout Finch, the six-year-old narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, lives in the 1930s near downtown Maycomb, a small town in Alabama, with her father Atticus, her brother Jem, and the cook Calpurnia. Atticus is the local attorney in town and is the father of Scout and Jem. Jem is Scout’s older brother. Calpurnia is the Finch home cook who lives near the center of town. People in the town of Maycomb are related to each other either by marriage or by blood. They are a close knit community.
Introduction:
The story begins at the beginning of summer. The character named Scout is only six and her brother is ten when they find a screaming boy hiding in the next door neighbour’s turnip green. Dill befriends Scout and Jem immediately as he captures their interest by revealing that he had already seen “Dracula”, which immediately lends him credibility. While spending the summer playing their favorite games together, they get bored and try to get their mischievous neighbor, Boo Radley, to come out of the a house
Boo Radley’s Conflict, Curiosity, and Fear of Scout, Jem, and Dill:
The seemingly fun goal of trying to get Boo Radley to leave his house became an obsession for the three – Dill, Scout, and Jem. They focus their creativity and fun skills to get Boo Radley out of the house. Boo lives on the same street where Scout and Jem live. There is a legendary story that Boo never comes out of his house and that all the mysterious events, including the smallest crimes in the town, are his doing. No one wants to pass his house alone after dark. Jem and Dill had a surprisingly fun idea. They agreed to run towards Boo’s house, touch the house, and then run back. Dill’s first attempt was successful. The characters were happy to still be alive. Jem got a lot of teasing from Dill and spent a lot of time thinking about the act.
