Being Born Again: Home Improvement or New Construction?

Jesus said, “No one can see the kingdom of heaven unless he is born again.” (John 3:3). A born-again disciple is one who has, literally, received a new lease on life. He or she gets to start over, sins forgiven. We are new creatures, the old has gone, the new has come, (2 Cor 5:17). The Holy Spirit, the promised parakletos (comforter, in Greek), now lives within each of us who are disciples of Christ. We are his home. Yes, God… the One who made both heaven and earth… chooses to live THROUGH those who claim Jesus as Lord so that He can advance His Kingdom THROUGH. Yes, we are in His home but for the purposes of the Kingdom, not for our own gain.

WARNING:

Many are under the false impression that, as disciples, our relationship with God simply makes us “better” people. A kind of “we’re in the club-and-you’re not” syndrome often comes into play. RIGHT! We are not BETTER people… we are NEW people! (It is said that some people are nicer by nature than Christians by grace.) We are called “believers.” That means we are to believe what the Scripture says. I believe that Jesus told us to go and make more disciples, Matthew 28: 18-20. Yes, we are now in God’s family, but for a definite reason.

How can this be? Remember, we are spiritual beings with an earthly experience. Those bodies will die and our spirit will live forever… somewhere. Heaven or Hell, it’s our choice. God Himself wants to work with us to bring others into His way of life in His Kingdom. So they can have a REAL life. Often, when someone proudly claims to be a Christian, one can’t help but wonder if they have Life. Real life. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life…” (John 14:6). The question then is, “Do they have Jesus?” Shall we?

Unfortunately, many non-Christians are under the impression that we think we are better than they are. This “holier than thou” attitude led them to describe God’s children as judgmental, hypocritical, and greedy, among other things.

It is the words of Christ that bring about the effects we want in our lives. Too many of us are all too aware, in fact, that from our supposed health experience, not only have we not changed one iota, but many of us have actually made things worse IN TRUST ” Save” us what we did before! How can this be? Who are we kidding? Many altar workers at evangelical crusades can testify to the many recurring “salvation” cards received by those who answered the “altar call.” Those organizations that keep good records can attest to the large numbers of “obligations” that come to the altar year after year, either to be “saved” (apparently in the hope of it really “holds” this time) or because they know in their hearts that nothing will change after experiencing what they thought was a life-changing moment. last time

The problem is at the heart. Our usual idea of salvation is that our sins would be forgiven, complete with a guarantee of a mansion in heaven in the sweet by hand. Unfortunately, this was not what Jesus taught at all.

Jesus focused on how it is now, and on the way in which we were to lead our lives in this new and living way that he introduced. He was even modeling it for us, setting the standard. He taught that we should 1) repent and believe the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, 2) deny ourselves, 3) pick up our cross daily, 4) give up everything, and 5) over 30 times to mention some form of the phrase, ‘Follow me.’ It stands to reason that as we make disciples, we should teach that making disciples is about following the example of Jesus Christ, doing his works and striving to the Kingdom of God. People have a twisted sense of forgiveness without lifestyle change… and they call it ‘grace’… when, in fact, discipleship is about denying oneself and glorifying God.

We cannot claim citizenship in the Kingdom of God and live with the system of this world. If we try to do this, yet claim to be saved, we are deceived. Satan loves it when we feel secure about our salvation without also having to deny sin and philosophy. He loves it even MORE when we keep this lie from the pulpit, in sermons, Sunday Schools, conferences, and the Christian media. Are we teaching Eternal Security or Infernal Certainty?

Over the years, I have personally prayed with hundreds of people to receive Christ… The Road of Rome, Four Spiritual Laws, ABCs of salvation, Professions of Faith. Then, one day, I stopped. Today, I am more likely to “take it away” from a person who thinks they want to be Christians, to go home and consult the pillow, counting his ‘ cost, and call me when they are ready. I was asked, “What if they die on the way home? You should at least say the sinner’s prayer! After all, Romans 10:9-10 says ‘confess with your mouth’ …”

Verily, God knows their hearts. They shouldn’t have to say a sound. Is the person who has laryngitis, or is mute, forbidden to go to heaven because they did not pray again? Hand-made doctrines and traditions strike again. Another holy cow bites the dust.

For example, I once asked a group to whom I had been teaching the Scriptures in the workplace, if everyone there saw themselves as Christians. All but one, a young Hispanic woman, claimed to be a Christian. The next day, when I was walking towards the stage, that same woman, walking out of the stage, grabbed my arm, took me around and said , “Michael, I want to be saved!” Two years later, she is still my disciple via email and phone. People, when the fruit is ready for harvesting, it mostly falls into our hands. No need for coaxing.

Was the soil of his spirit prepared through the studies? Yes, but she was encouraged to attend the studies by the Christian presence she saw in the workplace. The following Sunday night, I met her at work and she followed me in her car to a home meeting where she was warmly welcomed into the fold by other Christians to be a disciple. Especially from religious women. As it happened, within days of this experience, she was in a terrible car accident that almost cost her her life. She almost lost an arm that was horribly damaged. She was adequately prepared, however. Satan was not happy. The last thing she remembered before the accident? She was talking to her passenger about God.

Why not hold a crusade and tell the masses what Jesus told his potential disciples? Imagine hearing the following message over the PA system in a stadium: “Six times He warned that the world will hate you. Your family and friends will turn against you. He did not come to bring peace, but a sword that would separate families You will suffer persecution. You will die. Now, go home and think about giving up your life, and everything you love to follow this man who is called Jesus Christ .” I wonder how many will return the next night of the crusade??

“And everyone who has left a house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children or land, for the sake of my name, will receive a hundredfold, and eternal life as an inheritance. beginning,” (Mt 19:29-30).

Usually, we try to attract people into this institution we call “the Church” based on promises of peace, joy, love, unity and prosperity. Try selling THIS trash to a Sudanese minister who had acid poured all over his hands, in front of his congregation, by Muslim soldiers.

Or the Pakistani town whose Christian members were physically mutilated by radical Muslims.

Or a Chinese evangelist who will not sleep more than a few nights in the same bed for fear of being turned in, even by family members and informants including his own congregation, while Americans “a ‘buying’ the Chinese propaganda that there is freedom of religion.

The common method of Western discipleship is to train new converts to sit, carry a Bible, take a few notes, say ‘Amen’, engage in unbiblical teaching human, learn new rituals, the chain of command, and being human. “good” at this practice… even “professional.” Man, do we ever miss the boat!

No, nothing changes like God’s Word. These are not “bolt-on” tips for survival. Nor are they warm, vague, “thoughts for the day.” The Words of Christ are fundamental … the only thing upon which our new life can be built. And maintained. Use them. Filter every other teaching you’ve ever heard…or are hearing right now…THROUGH HIS words, even that teaching that comes from within the pages of Scripture himself!

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine, and puts them into practice, is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew , and they struck the house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25)

Doesn’t it make logical sense that to be a Christian (meaning, literally, an anointed person; young Jesus), one must follow the Christian teachings? For those who want to live in this new way, as new creatures, Jesus asked (maybe still),

“Why do you call “Lord, Lord of me,” and do not do as I say?”

“If you follow my words, you are really my disciples…” (John 8:31,32; 15:7)

“He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25).
