You Don’t Have To Be A Genius To Write A Love Poem
Love poems are a wonderful romantic gesture and can often express your thoughts far more delicately than verbal communication.
If you have some talent with words, why not take a few minutes and try your hand at writing a poem for your lover? Just sit down and list the reasons why you think they are special. Then put those thoughts into some form of free verse: a column of lines, roughly the same length, that could rhyme but don’t have to.
Take some time to read over what you’ve written and you’ll get some ideas on how to improve a line or phrase. The goal is to express your feelings as honestly and clearly as possible. Simplicity is the key. And if you’re really motivated, you can spend half an hour of preparation time reading some classic romantic poems to get your brain into that ‘groove’.
Even if your poem doesn’t win any literary awards, the person you present it to will treasure it as if it were written by one of the great romantic poets. People tend to value a personal gift much more than a purchased one. What they really appreciate is the time and effort invested on their behalf.
I would like to share a story about the first time I received a love poem.
When I was twelve years old I was criticizing Robert, the new boy in my class at school, and he had very generously decided that I was “cute”. One evening we were waiting with some classmates at the bus stop when he announced that he didn’t like me anymore. He was now in love with my best friend, Julie.
I was so upset by this betrayal that I made fun of him and chased him down the street. He drove into the gutter and I went down after him just as the bus came in. He hit me from behind and I went down. The bus then ran over my right leg.
Shortly after, the ambulance arrived and the paramedic driver examined me. He decided I didn’t need a hospital so he drove me home with instructions to spend the next six weeks in bed. At the same time, Robert was distressed blaming himself for the accident. He asked the other children at the bus stop where I lived, and walked the two miles to my house. Then he sat across the street on the sidewalk, wondering if my father would stop him if he knocked on the front door.
A couple of hours later he worked up the courage to confront my father, which was very embarrassing as my father did not know about Robert’s part in the drama Robert went into my room and gave me a sheet of paper; he had written a poem for me while sitting across the street from my house. I remember how happy I was that someone would do such a thing. It was like something out of a novel or a movie.
I kept that poem, which ran to a legal page and a half, for several years, until it disappeared when we moved house ten years later. But I still remember the first four lines:
First name Marguerite
I like that girl a lot
She means so much more to me
Except any gem or pearl
That was a lifetime ago and yet I still remember those words.
As for the boy himself, when I got back to school Robert had moved on to greener pastures (he was now liking my best friend’s new friend). But that hardly mattered because I was now a famous person because I was hit by a bus while running a boy. The nuns had a field day praying for my soul, and that was probably not the last time they engaged in that exercise.
My right foot is still a little flatter than my left but it was worth it for the fame. And hey, Robert, wherever you are, thanks for the memory.
Using Other People’s Love Poems
If you don’t have Robert’s literary talent, there is another option. Find an existing poem that expresses how you feel best and present it to your lover within a greeting card or gift. Or is it framed and presented with a bouquet of flowers.
There are several online sites that offer love poems. You can find a list on our website or use one of the search tools.
