Career Change Resume Writing Tips

Writing a career change resume is very different than what you may be used to when creating a regular resume, but is becoming more common every day.

Many people find themselves looking at new career paths, some find that their company has downsized others simply determine that it is time to make a change for financial reasons. If you have found yourself in this situation recently you may be at a loss where to start making these changes. Who and what you are going to be from now on and then how to get there can be challenging to say the least, here are some tips for that.

A New Role

Before you can create your new resume for a career change, you need to determine what the change will be. Do you want to start a completely new career that has little, if anything, to do with your current position? Perhaps you have been in your chosen profession for 20 plus years and just want to go to a new direction within the field, these decisions are important to create your new beginning.

Back

The first thing you should do is start a brand new resume, the main mistake most job seekers make is to dust off their old resume. out for a new career path. You may be using some of the same information but you’ll want to retool it to fit your career goals. From the research you should have already completed you can create a list of requirements that a hiring manager would have in your desired field and work on your resume to fill those requirements.

It is a good idea to look at your life as a whole for knowledge that may translate to your career. This is especially true if you are heading on a new route. Look into things like hobbies and volunteering, even if these aren’t part of your job description there could be valuable skills you’ve picked up that will translate to your new role. For example, your current job may not require a lot of records but if you have been doing the files and books for a charity over the past ten years, that is relevant work experience.

Resume or Cover Letter

The next question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you need the full resume right now, if you are entering a completely new career field a letter may be a simple cover that explains your interest and experience sufficiently to get an interview. This will largely depend on the company you are applying with, and again whether you are changing jobs completely or just moving up in your current field.

Decision

Changing careers today is no easy task and if you want the best chance at a new and exciting future, your resume needs to reflect that desire. Include relevant past and present work experience and even anecdotal evidence of times when your business has had a specific issue and how you were instrumental in finding a solution. You need to shine above the competition when looking for a new role, which is not easy in today’s job market. Finally, make sure you include the right keywords in your resume, things that make it easier to find in a database of thousands of applications. These keywords should be related to the important features of the job you are looking for.
