Grandma Shops For Toys For Christmas 2009

Toys have always been my love. When I was a little girl I was delighted with the mystery and surprise of getting a new toy. Later with my own children I had the opportunity to visit the world of toys again. I even considered owning a toy shop.

Christmas is almost upon us again and many of us are combing the stores, scratching our heads, or looking online to buy toys. I now have five wonderful grandchildren. They range in age from five months to six years old. I am excited to look for toys for them. In the last two years I have done this research almost exclusively online. I find that there is a lot of information about the toys available and the prices are excellent.

For the babies on my list I consider:

Hasbro Playskool Busy Ball Popper – This toy was at my great grandson’s daycare and all the little kids loved it. They enjoyed putting the balls on the spiral path and never seemed to tire of the balls coming out of the top. I’m not sure if any of them knew why the balls were coming out but it was a lot of fun and laughter.

LeapFrog Learn & Groove Music Chart – One of the nice things about this music table is that the child can play with it if it is flat on the floor. Then when they start to pull themselves up the child can hold it and press the different activity buttons for sounds and music. I like this toy because it is suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo – There is nothing better for a child than to jump. Once a baby is able to hold their head up well, this is a great toy to test those legs without putting any pressure on them. There are toys around him. Some of them will make sounds when the baby jumps. Others are good for gripping or batting. The seat rotates 360 degrees. It is very portable and can be stored easily.

Fisher-Price Amazing animals sing and go Choo-Choo – This is a wonderful train. It is suitable for crawling babies. One of the amazing things about it is that there are no tracks from which the train falls off. The colors of the train and the animals are beautiful. By placing one of the animals in the engine a baby will get a song. The train lights up, plays music and makes noises.

For the babies on my list I’m looking at:

Fisher-Price Go Baby Go! Bounce & Spin Zebra – This comes either as a zebra or a pony. It’s great for toddlers who can climb on it and rock away. It is low to the ground so any spills will not harm the baby. In addition to rocking, the child can spin on it. It helps with balance and the beginning of coordination. It’s a fun toy.

LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set – This magnetic game can be placed on any metal surface as the best height cooler for baby. The animals are large enough not to be choking hazards. At first the child will enjoy pushing the buttons to activate the sounds. As the child grows and grows a little they will begin to match the animal’s body parts and match the animal to the sounds. Even if they don’t look like them they get a silly name for the animal. It’s portable so kids can play with it on the floor out of the way of preparing dinner.

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel – I think that an easel is an essential part of every child’s life. As soon as a child can stand and hold a rock, an easel will allow them hours of entertainment and creativity. This unique easel is sturdy and allows for painting, chalk, crayons and dry erase.

Fisher-Price Musical Tea Set – This is a cute set of play dishes in beautiful pastel colors. What child does not want to imitate the adults in their lives and feed them? Constructed of strong plastic it will withstand those times when the tea falls from little hands. The teapot is bold and plays “I’m a little teapot.”

The most powerful Tonka truck – Kids need trucks in their lives and no one does them better than Tonka. I’m sure we had this same truck when our kids were young. It is rugged and stands up to a lot of abuse. We have always restricted these larger Tonka toys to outdoors but they can be used indoors with instructions.

For four to five year olds on my list I consider:

LeapFrog Text and Learn – By this age children want to do everything that adults do in life. With everyone running around with Blackberries and I Phones this gives this age group their own handheld device. It also allows them to search for words and start spelling.

LEGO Duplo Building 5380 – Like Tonka, Lego has lived and developed over the decades. It is still popular with boys and girls. One of the benefits of buying Lego is that you can add to it at a birthday or next Christmas.

Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera – Again just like Mom and Dad’s kids like to take their own pictures. They don’t worry about writing they just skip away. They are more than happy to upload their photos to the computer with everyone else’s photos. These cameras are almost indestructible and reasonably waterproof. A kindergarten teacher uses them in her classroom and the kids love it.

Baby Alive Learns to Potty – This doll has the most attractive blue eyes. She eats, she pees and she eats. She also talks and has expressions like “oh oh rinni mi stinky” that sent children into fits of laughter. It is possible to introduce it earlier than four years of age when children are training themselves. At an earlier age the child who is playing with her needs guidance. She is pleasant.

Barbie and the three musketeers game – After 50 years Barbie is still very much in demand. This year’s release is the line of Barbie and the Three Musketeers dolls and accessories. The concept is built around the theory that girls can do anything they set their minds to – even become Musketeers! In addition to the dolls there is a magical castle and a carriage. What fairy tale would be complete without them?

For our children aged six to eight I have the list;

Transformers – These action figures which are also three-dimensional puzzles will delight the boys who have them. Even little boys who don’t know the comics or movies entertain themselves with their own adventures. It is the highest selling Optimus Prime, Ultimate Bumblebee, Devastator and Megatron.

Bakugan 7 in 1 Maxus Dragonoid – While adults scratch their heads in wonder, little boys get involved in these marble spheres. This is an expansion of the Japanese game Bakugan in which heroes are pitted against each other. I think the amazing thing about these magnetic marbles as heroes is that little boys who don’t know the strategy game can come up with their own way to play with them. I like this game because it lasts as the players get older and more interested in learning the game.

Play Mindflex – No question this is the #1 selling game this year. Since its introduction earlier this year it has intrigued players looking for something more than mind games. In this game out of the future game there are players with sensors on them and with their abilities to aim to control the speed of the fans in the console. Many customers who have already bought it report that they have more ability to focus on the youth. It is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Nintendo DS Lite – This video game system is great for quiet times and for travel. There are seemingly endless games that can be played on it. It has the ability to connect wirelessly so that players can share their skills with others around the world. One of the most popular applications for this handheld device is the Mario Kart DS.

LeapFrog Tag Reading System – I see that my grandchildren at this age are very interested in learning to read for themselves. Here’s another great product from LeapFrog to help them do this. This system has won many awards for its over 17 learning functions.

These are some of the selections that I think fit the criteria of durable, long-lasting and fun.
