Getting Started In Collecting Vintage Barbie Dolls

Girls all over the world are captivated by the beauty of this slim three-dimensional plastic doll named Barbie. It is interesting to note, however, that even women in their thirties are still interested in collecting Barbie figures. From the Barbie fairy tale collection to the summertime escapade theme, this toy has come a long way over the past 4 decades. It was created by Ruth Handler and named after her daughter Barbara Handler.

The first few dolls created cost $3 each. The first Barbie doll had a pony tail, a bathing suit, sunglasses, earrings and a pair of open shoes. Her swimsuit design is a striped black and white zebra print. This is the most valuable Barbie doll today and only a few collectors own it as it is the rarest to find. The next few collections are named after their hairstyles. The next one was called the Barbie Ponytail Dolls which are numbered according to the year they came out. Ponytail Dolls number 1 and 2 came in 1959, number 3 (1960), number 4 (1960), number 5 (1961), and number 6 and 7 (1962-1966).

The next collection that followed was called the Barbie Bubblecut Dolls which were produced between 1961 and 1967. In 1963, Fashion Queen Barbie came with dyed hair and three wigs to choose from because wigs were a popular item for women at that time.

Then in 1964, the Barbie Swirl Ponytail became popular and the improved appearance of the Barbie made her look more glamorous with several new clothes and accessories to collect. This Barbie went on until 1966 and is the collectible that most collectors are looking for today. Also in the same year, Miss Barbie came and was the first doll with sleepy eyes that also had curved legs. Her hair was styled and she also came with 3 interchangeable wigs.

In 1965, American Girl Barbie was popular for the new shoulder-length hairstyle with bangs. Then came the revolutionary Color Magic Barbie in 1966 with a choice of blonde or black hair that would change to a scarlet color after applying a solution. His makeup is also very vibrant which really suited his theme of exploding colors. However, this is the rarest one found today and also the most expensive. The dolls produced in the following years are now referred to as the Mod Era Barbie dolls released between 1967 and 1972.
