Adopting a Reborn Doll – The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

So are you thinking of buying one of these amazing dolls?

Buying a reborn doll is based more on emotion than sense – the heart rules the head. The props and sets used in pictures are all designed to take you to this side. Baby powder, soft toys, lace and fur are all meant to make the doll look (either sound asleep or staring at you with eyes open) so irresistible that you want to pick it up and not put it down.

When you see a reborn doll you love you feel like you have to have it. An advertising image at its best. Just as ‘coke’ is synonymous with youth and fun, effective rebirth baby pictures convey the same emotions as the best of Johnson’s baby powder ads – the promise of unconditional love and warm hugs.

Some people have said that they were so upset when they lost a newborn baby on eBay that their hearts were set on it, they cried for days.

But I’m just warning you, if the baby arrives and it’s not what you expected, this is also very disappointing and your wallet will be lighter. So it’s wise to use your head a bit before making a purchase.

Reborns are all over the place and there are lots on eBay (a real mixed bag – some are quite scary). There are many doll forums and one in particular has a section called “Is she selling this?” which indicates some of the poor rebirth doll work on the market.

Should price be the best indicator? What about guild membership and rewards? How do you know? So what are you looking for and what separates a good doll from a poor one?

Price

Price is not the best indicator – high prices do not guarantee quality and there are excellent ones that are reasonably priced. Huge prices (of thousands of dollars) are commanded by a handful of reborn artists.

Awards

Be careful with guilds and memberships – most do not require proof of talent or customer service to be authorized to use. Pay attention to the prizes – sometimes they are the only one in the competition.

Examining the product

I think nothing can beat seeing a doll before you buy it, but this is not often an option because this is a very electronic and international business (without borders).

If you can’t see the real thing then pictures are the next best thing. But be careful with pictures – there are all kinds of electronic filters and artificial lighting that make them look better than they are. You should be delighted when your rebirth arrives and think that the pictures didn’t do them justice at all. Ask an artist about the enhancements and lighting used in their paintings.

Then check the reputation of the artist (and remember that talent as an artist, honesty and customer service can be mutually exclusive). Satisfaction guarantees, damage repair policies should be understood and are signs of good customer service. Feedback from eBay is a sign of honesty and customer service. Talent is up to you as the judge.

My strong recommendation is to look on the internet or join a forum or two and find an artist there. Beware of the lists of rebirth nurseries on the site – they are not a guarantee of quality or honesty. Most artists display their work and have it in their signature on forums.

Here are some tips on what to look for when looking at dolls in person or photos:

1. Judge how much the doll looks like a baby. A good rebirth should be mistaken for a baby.

My daughter has taken her newborn out shopping with us and of course she (she is 6 years old) is sick of carrying them so I have to carry them. I am caught in a difficult situation. Do I nurse this baby like it’s real and people think I’m a nut who nurses dolls OR do I just carry her around like she’s my daughters doll do i need to card it now?

Well for a good rebirth you have no choice but the first option. I had to endure the sight of many people in a major shopping center glaring at me like I was a neglectful parent. I have learned that it is not acceptable in public to shove a baby (and therefore a reborn doll) at the bottom of a shopping trailer. It is also not appropriate to hold a child casually between your elbow and your hand with hanging arms even if your hand gives good support to the head. Also in general people are very critical of you (and give you a bad look) if they think that a baby should be wrapped a little warmer.

2. Look at the details – hands & feet (look at the nail detail), ears (how real they look – sometimes limited by the detail of the sculpture – more expensive sculptures have more detail), eyebrows (should look real) and the chips and cracks should not look like cuts.

3. Artists work hard to achieve realistic skin tones and this should make the baby look clear (look for this – it’s a sign of quality).

4. The rooting of the mohair. The hair should be shiny and soft and rooted so that it is not “clumpy” at all. The rooting should be directional – that’s a different angle to sit nicely across the head. Some artists do amazing work with directional rooting with crown/crowns, parts etc. Look for this – it’s a sign of quality.

Personal choice

Some people like their dolls to look real with milk spots, rashes and scratches. If you don’t like them don’t buy a reborn baby with them. A personal taste. I personally don’t like these. I know they are real but when my babies rashes were real I couldn’t wait for them to go away. So I think I wouldn’t want them on a doll permanently.

Some people like sculptures with funny funny faces. Well I say good for them – to each their own. I love beautiful babies (although I see the beauty in the rather funny faces newborns make) and I try to achieve this mixed with realism in the sculpting options I have and the painting.

Good luck finding a doll you love.
