3 Reasons to Choose a Good Cat Diet

When you think of your cat’s diet, do you think that they have to eat any food.

While it is true that cats often clean down things we believe that you should have good cat food and well-being for your cat’s health and well-being.

Cheaper cat food often contains ingredients that are dangerous, full of toxic preservatives, humectants, and flavoring agents to entice a cat to eat.

You may save money in the short term, but you will be setting yourself up for high vet bills, and also creating serious pain and discomfort for your furry companion.

After all, they are an important member of your family. Cats are known as healers, and they often have different ways of sharing their influence.

3 reasons for choosing a healthy cat diet

Cats, like humans, do not thrive on fast food, high carbohydrate, kibble.

Eating the wrong cat diet, they can suffer from arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and obesity, just like humans.

The only difference between us and felines is that once they live in captivity, they have very little control over their diet. Cats depend on us to provide them with healthy food, especially when they live indoors.

Cats are natural predators… their diet needs to reflect that fact, so here are three reasons to choose a good cat food that will extend your pet’s life.

1. Dental health

Just like humans, many health problems occur in house cats with poor dental hygiene.

Your cat may have bad breath – which is unpleasant – but the diseases that cause halitosis could be much more dangerous than you think for their immune system and overall health .

Kittens lose their baby teeth between four and six months. During that time, there are gaps in the mouth that are bacteria magnets.

You probably go to the dentist regularly, to make sure that your teeth and gums are in good shape.

But how does your cat maintain their oral health? They need good quality food and supplements that help remove plaque and stimulate their gums to maintain the strength of their teeth and the cleanliness of their mouths.

2. Cats are carnivores

Like it or not, your cat is a hunter, a predator, a carnivore. They will not do well with a vegetarian or vegan diet.

So, although you may have chosen to eliminate meat from your diet and have replaced the protein with beans, meat options and supplements, your cat needs animal protein.

It is a source of a vital amino acid – taurine – which helps develop strong muscles, including the heart.

A fish-based cat food can work well – it’s loaded with Omega fatty acids that fuel your body… However, most fish have been contaminated with heavy metals and toxins or parasites, and is very unhealthy. It should be fine to offer fish as food from time to time to a healthy cat, but be sure to keep it on a regular diet.

Avoid foods that contain too many fillers, such as wheat and barley. They may fill your cat’s belly, but they won’t provide the protein they need for healthy development. And they can lead to obesity and diabetes, and many other problems.

Also, cats are naturally designed to hunt and eat their prey raw, not cooked in an oven or processed at high heat in a tin can. Carnivores have blood, moisture (water) and partially digested food in their gills, bones and organs and much more.

When deciding what to feed your kitten, go with a high quality wet food, not a dry cardboard style kibble. Some cats do well with a good wet food, while others do better on raw food.

3. Cats need to water

There is nothing wrong with feeding your dog a dry food diet from time to time as a snack or treat. It’s easier to store, usually cheaper, and you have more options for ingredients suitable for your cat’s diet.

But remember, they also need ready access to water, and they can overload on carbs, just like us… so follow the directions on the package and pay attention to your kitty’s needs.

On the flip side, the wrong wet food can rob your cat of the roughage they need to keep their digestive system running smoothly. You will often see cats and dogs outside eating grass… they are just trying to get their nails working again so they can clean their insides.

If you have an indoor cat, consider keeping cat grass (or adding another source of fiber to their food) to help keep their digestive tract on track.

Your cat can’t go to the grocery store

Your cat has basic dietary needs… and then they develop their own tastes, just like children. Of course, there is a stage during growing up where they learn what is good to eat and what is not good to eat, and after that it can be very difficult to change their mind about what what is acceptable and what is not!

However, unlike your children who will grow up and be able to shop on their own and satisfy their taste buds, and – hopefully – make wise dietary choices…

Your cat can’t do the same. It is up to you to communicate with them, explain why different foods are good for them and why some are not, and then meet their dietary needs.

You may think that good quality food is too expensive, that it is too much trouble to research the alternatives…

but think of the pain you could cause your cat companion if they end up with kidney stones, ulcers, or stomach cancer because you have fed their body too many toxic foods.

Cats are designed to hunt and eat small portions throughout the day, but free grazing (eating when they want) with poor quality is a bad idea. Smaller and more nutritious wet food makes for a healthier and longer-lived kitten.

It helps if you can talk to your cat, and find out what suits their palate, and what meets their nutritional needs, and what makes them feel sick or will cause pain.

Remember, your cat goes through growth stages, just like we do. Food that is suitable for them at six months will not keep them healthy when they are five years old… or ten, or twenty.

You can set your cat up for a long, healthy life without visiting the vet clinic by feeding your cat good food.
