Baby Got Gas? A Guide to Baby Indigestion
Have you ever heard of child abuse? Do you even know what that is? Well think about burnout and rudeness and how it can make you feel. The pressure deep in your chest and abdomen is enough to make you feel like you’re having a heart attack. Now imagine that feeling on a 2 week old baby. YIKEES!!! I can tell you that whatever you feel is amplified by 100% in your child. In addition to the great pain that the child feels is the fact that they have no way of telling you how they feel. They can not say “mommy my abdomen hurt”.
What causes infant discomfort?
Well, in adults there are several reasons, but, for babies, I think we can safely eliminate drinking alcohol, smoking and eating spicy foods! It is also very unusual for babies to have stomach ulcers or gallstones. This means that we can focus on food allergies and sensitivities as the two main causes of infant disorders. So now that we have a general idea of the possible causes of infantile disorder; how can we tell if our child is malnourished?
Symptoms of childhood depression include:
• Bloating and/or crying that may end after gas is released
• No sleep
• Curds of undigested food in stool (okay, let’s call it poop, that’s what it is!)
• Very foul smelling poop and even diarrhea in extreme cases
Now it is very important that we understand one thing; and that is a sadness that is not a cause or illness in itself. It’s just a symptom. So what we need to do is to find the real reason for the unruly babies. So be aware that the real causes of discomfort in a child are:
• Spoiled food
• Food allergies
• Food sensitivities
Spoiled food and infantile disorders
Spoiled food is not good for adults as it can lead to all kinds of stomach problems and this is no different for our children. So if you are feeding your child with formula – make sure the best before date has not expired. In addition, you must be very careful when sterilizing all bottles and equipment that touch baby formula. Make sure the water you are giving the baby or using to mix powdered formula is safe and boiled.
Another thing we should avoid at all costs is reheating bottles. Mothers if you are guilty of this habit please, please, STAND AWAY. If the baby has not eaten everything, throw it away. Also if you are pumping breast milk, make sure you ONLY use sterilized containers to store it. Refrigerate and use the milk within a day or two or store in a freezer to make it last longer. Following these simple tips could significantly reduce children’s anxiety.
Phew!!! Now that took care of spoiled food. Ok, what about food allergies and how do babies have allergies when they get food but one thing?? ï Š I mean does this even make sense? Read on.
At first it can be confusing trying to differentiate between an allergy and a food sensitivity. So how can you tell the difference and how is it related to infantile malignancy?
Food Allergies and Infant Sensitivities and Disorders – Formula
First we must understand that allergies can cause strong reactions such as hives and severe dropsy, vomiting, swelling in soft tissue such as ears and lips, or be life-threatening with anaphylactic shock reactions. Sensitivity; however, they are milder and cause discomfort, discomfort, constipation and less severe skin rashes. You know those foods that just don’t ‘agree’ with you.
It is very common for babies to be allergic or sensitive to cow protein. Rest assured that most will grow out of this by the age of one, but that first year can be difficult. For these nursing mothers, you will need to switch to a soy-based formula or one designed specifically for babies with cow protein sensitivity.
Oh there is one word of warning; and that is, it is common for babies with cow protein sensitivity to have soy protein sensitivity. However, rest assured that there are formulas out there that do not contain soy or cow’s milk.
Food Allergies and Infant Sensitivities and Disorders – Breastfeeding
If you are breastfeeding, cut all dairy out of your diet. This is because the foods you eat are given to your baby through your milk. So breast milk can contain traces of cow’s milk protein from the milk you eat. By that, I mean cut out ALL dairy if you want to reduce infant imbalances. Start reading food labels!!
Trust me, I know this sounds silly, I’ve done it myself in the past. You will get a headache and feel like crap for a few days while your body detoxifies and works the milk through your system. Basically, you will go through some withdrawal. Cheese as a drug…who knew?
The Fix – replace goat’s milk with cow’s milk as this is usually well tolerated. After breastfeeding my kids for 6 months, I switched them both to goat milk and guess what?? They still love it. It is available in most grocery stores and can be frozen if you need to stock up!
So how can you relieve your baby from Baby Indigestion?
You can use gripe water for ‘instant’ relief of baby colic. You can find this at any drugstore, and many health food stores have an alternative with all natural ingredients. I have also tried some of the tablets on the market – most manufacturers call indigestion Colic so look for products that say Colic Relief or something like that. The label “Colic” is a bit confusing because colic in babies may have nothing to do with miscarriage but that’s a discussion for another newsletter!
In addition you can give your baby belly massages and baby enemas to relieve incontinence. Remember though that none of these “instant relief” methods target the cause of the irritation; they just treat the symptoms.
A longer solution to the problem is to look for the food sensitivities and allergies that may be causing the disorder in the first place.
How can this be done?
By analyzing a stool sample from your baby, your doctor will be able to determine whether undigested cow’s protein is present and whether your baby is sensitive to milk.
As always, I recommend talking to a medical or naturopathic doctor about your baby’s symptoms if you are concerned.
