Tattoo Fear: Fear of Needles

The fear of needles is very real and can even cause fear-based health problems. Fear has nothing to do with tattoos. Keep in mind that you must be conscious and sober while getting a tattoo. I’ve heard common stories everywhere of someone asking for a tattoo or being asked if they could pass out first. Thirty or forty years ago it might have been more common, though still wrong. In today’s modern age, no reputable tattoo artist will even let you near a tattoo if you are drunk or passed out. What they do is call 911.

Common symptoms of these phobias may include anxiety, panic, crying, tremors, fainting, loss of consciousness, increased high blood pressure (hypertension) and/or irrational behavior. Many people do not like needles. However, there is a huge difference between not loving needles and suffering from any of these symptoms.

My 13-year-old daughter, who has not been officially diagnosed with a phobia, I believe has trypanophobia. Whenever we go to the doctor’s office, when she sees the needle, her eyes roll into the back of her head; she faints. On another occasion, she kept yelling at her mom, saying she couldn’t see; before passing out. It is quite scary to see this in your daughter.

My wife usually takes her to the doctor or hospital. On one occasion I went with them to the hospital when she needed some tests. Before the nurse came to shoot her, I took the nurse aside to explain the needle situation. After telling me she understood, she proceeded to shoot saline from the needle right in front of her to test it out. My daughter started shaking and crying. Needless to say, I politely escorted the nurse OUT OF THE ROOM. Some people…

There are 4 phobias that can be directly or indirectly related to the fear of needles and tattoos:

  • Aichmophobia

  • Belonephobia

  • Enetophobia

  • Trypanophobia

Trypanophobia or needle phobia is the absolute fear of needles in medical situations. Simply put, this is the biggest fear of injections. This phobia can be very dangerous. Unlike other phobias, this one can actually kill. The fear is so great that people have been known to ignore all medical help and treatment. Can you imagine fear so great that you consciously disregard your own health? It’s very real. Historically, some psychologists believe that it stems from an evolutionary drive to survive. Stab wounds, puncture wounds, etc. could prove fatal before antibiotics became commonplace in the world.

Aichmophobia or fear of sharp objects includes trypanophobia and others. Any kind of sharp objects: needles, knives, nails, needles and even pencils. For most individuals with this fear, it is not widespread All sharp objects. It’s much more specific. Someone may have nails in order, but not screws. Knives may be fine, but not a carving knife. This does not mean that they are limited to one subject and not to many different objects – that is very real and possible. It simply means that it is not a general fear of sharp objects. The greatest danger in this fear lies in the improper use of sharp objects that one fears.

Belonephobia is an abnormal fear of sharp pointed objects with an emphasis on needles. Like trypanophobia, fear can make a person so irrational that they don’t seek medical help when needed because the fear is so great.

Enetophobia is an irrational or abnormal fear of pins specifically and related to belonephobia.

Almost 20% of the world’s population has some degree of fear of needles and injections. You are not alone and you can get help if you need it. Everyone is different, so what works for one person may or may not work for another. Do your research.

If your fear is more of a strong resistance, there are things you can do to distract yourself from it while getting a tattoo or even forms of self-meditation that can help. However, if your fear is at an all-time high and you find yourself crying, fainting, or shaking, you may want to reconsider getting a tattoo, as it may become a private torture for you. I love tattoos but the first thing I would say is to get over your fear.

The more relaxed you are during the tattoo, the better it will work. Keep in mind; getting a tattoo is a completely different needle than going to a doctor’s office or a hospital. They are nothing alike. A tattoo needle will hardly break the skin and you will never see someone coming at you with that massive hypodermic needle.

In your research on tattoos and phobias, you may also want to bring these concerns up to the artists you talk to to make sure you find someone who shares your concerns.
