Unflattering Things 97% of Women Say About Their Bodies

In the Body and Soul section of the Sunday Mail, Brisbane, 26 June 2011, pages 6-7, Eloise King reported a terrifying insight into the poor body image that many, far too many women have. The statistics presented were very disturbing.

A study of 2,000 women in the UK found that when they see another woman, they think about how fat she is more than anything else. Accepting this finding as true, it is not surprising that so many women have a poor, negative opinion of their body shape.

Celebrity cosmetic surgery is well known, so again it’s no wonder that an international study revealed that more than ninety percent of women between the ages of 15 and 64 would change at least one thing about their physical appearance if they could. It was reported that the number one change they would make was their weight.

Only 3 percent of women seem to have no negative comments about their appearance – that’s a whopping 97 percent who make negative statements about their body shape to themselves or others. what does he hate In the US King news, stomachs and thighs are top contenders with the statement “I’m ugly” also ranking.

It can be a very lonely place when you think you are the only one there. Women should not feel alone when they have these thoughts, which are likely to occur every hour of your waking hours for almost the entire female population, the average was 13 times a day.

It’s no wonder we have young girls concerned with their physical appearance as they model their parents and the images of “perfect bodies” they see in the media. From this desire to have a perfect body – the holy grail that appears in most women, there is a huge price for society.

The recognition of genetics, time and money that “glamour women” have and put into shaping their bodies needs to be acknowledged and is out of reach for many women.

Many women (it seems like 97 percent of them) need to start realizing that inner beauty is a much stronger force than the body that carries it.

American cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Joseph Murphy, found that when a patient learns to value himself, treatment is more effective than surgery. You can read about his fascinating journey in his book “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”. There you will find that many times he didn’t even have to use a scalpel after discovering why surgery changed some patients’ level of life satisfaction and not others. He found that when a psychological approach was used, his results improved dramatically and, as noted above, some patients avoided surgery.

Everyone needs to find the secret to healthy weight loss that works for them, and acknowledging that “My unique body shape is mine” is a good place to start. No matter what program you choose, it must include a balanced, nutritious diet, exercise, and mindset. The latter, the way of thinking, is the most often forgotten element.

Taking responsibility for our own health and making the most of our genetic blueprint is the best thing we can do. Seeking your best performance and enjoying the wins along the way will build true beauty through self-acceptance and your self-esteem and confidence. Without taking personal responsibility, working towards acceptance and building your own self-confidence, the journey becomes very difficult.

As stated above, we cannot change our genetics and you have to maximize what you have. We are not all built the same. If you have a solid build and are 5ft tall, then aspiring to be a 6ft model on the catwalk is unrealistic, but you can offer a lot more. A great role model could be the very successful and respected Magda Szubanski. Your lifestyle, attitude and approach to maximizing your potential will be far more beneficial than trying to find what society says is the perfect body shape.

The movie “Shallow Hal” (love it or hate it) has a great lesson for all of us because loving who we are and not what we are is so important.

From my weight management experience as a hypnotist, I offer a few little tips that can help overcome the negative “my body shape…” issues that apparently almost all women struggle with.

  • a) Find a nutritious diet that suits your lifestyle and body type. What works for your friend may not work for you, seek the help of a nutritionist or dietitian
  • b) Work on your cardiovascular fitness and muscle building regularly
  • c) Accept who you are, love yourself in a kind and humble way and share that love with the world
  • d) Enjoy and appreciate the positive and good things that happen in your daily life, appreciate the presence
  • e) Often focusing on your body and being dissatisfied with it is just a cover for a deeper problem, so find out if there is a hidden problem in it. Fix that and you’ll probably fix the external focus as well
  • f) Get a training partner or coach – this will keep you “honest” and more fun
  • g) Be independent and individual – your peers can be your enemy if you allow them to control you; and finally
  • h) Work on your mindset – (a hypnotist, NLP practitioner, psychologist or coach can help you with this)

Last observation. It’s interesting that what we focus on tends to manifest. With this awareness, try to speak flatteringly about yourself—body, mind, and soul—and feel, hear, and see how the world is different, better in many ways, when you do.

This is a cycle that needs to be broken or it will plague the next generation.
