Lewis & Clark Expedition – Did Sacajawea Voluntarily Donate Her Beaded Belt For a Fur Cloak?

Place and event.

Shortly after the Corps of Discovery arrived on the west coast of the Pacific, it was no accident that several members of the tribe appeared before Lewis and Clark in excellent fur clothing. These coastal tribes were commercially savvy. For years they traded with foreign sailors. They also knew what the explorer had in mind beyond finding a cross-country trade route.

Thus, Lewis and Clark were amazed by a peculiar sea otter cloak worn by a member of the tribe. However, they did not have enough tradable goods on hand to get it from him. The native also wanted the blue beaded belt worn by the wife of the choir interpreter Sacajawea. Did she voluntarily give it up for the purchase?

Sacajawea’s adolescence.

About five years earlier, Sacajawea’s early teenage life had undergone tumultuous changes. As a 12-year-old Lemhi Shoshone girl living near what is now the Idaho-Montana border, she was captured by a band of Hidatsa warriors. From there, she was taken to a large Hidatsa-Mandan bi-tribal village near the Knife and Missouri rivers in North Dakota, where she was adopted by a Hidatsa family. The practice of capturing children from different tribes was common among plains tribes at the time.

During the next four years in her new home, she learned the Hidatsa language and worked with the village women in their large field gardens. The Hidatsa and Mandan tribes were matriarchal matrilineal agricultural tribes. This means that women there owned and inherited 20 feet above ground covered cottages and huge gardens that they maintained. They also led large clans within these tribes, while the men took care of village defense and hunting needs. In fact, the women of these two tribes grew so much food that they stored underground during the winter months that they easily traded parts of it for needed goods from several non-agricultural tribes and from French and English hunters passing through the region.

During these four short premarital, prematernal years in her new Sacagawea tribe, she had to make a favorable impression on the older women there. Her adoptive mother may have had influence in their Hidatsa clan, but how much no one knows for sure. Nevertheless, Sacagawea eventually received a belt with blue beads from an influential society of women there. According to tribal historians, such belts were awarded to those who were industrious and perhaps intelligent and well-founded. The belt itself could be three fingers wide, with the extended part hanging down at the point of attachment.

This belt meant a lot to Sacajawea. It meant more to her than just success through her work. For her, this belt meant acceptance and success outside of her own tribal bloodline. It was a visible proof of her all-round ability as a human being. This belt may have further inspired her to grow into a well-rounded mid-teen. Then, at the age of 16, she married a French-Canadian fur trader.

Meeting Lewis and Clark

Shortly thereafter, in late 1804, they met the Corps of Discovery there in their twin village, where she gave birth to a baby boy on February 11, 1805. Captain Lewis assisted with the delivery. The captains also hired her trapper husband, Touissiant Charbonneau, as an interpreter. He spoke French, Hidatsa and Mandan and could sign. As it also turned out, Sacagawea, who spoke Hidatsa and Shoshone, accompanied him and his son on this dangerous journey. Their son was not even two months old when they left the village for the west.

During the journey west, Sacajawea showed considerable maturity and ability. Lewis and Clark praised her in their journals for calmly picking up floating goods from the river while the boat she was in began to capsize in a windstorm. She also supplied the congregation with many wild edibles and thought nothing of it. Moreover, she remembered well the sights of the Shoshone country and their language.

She thus helped immensely with the necessary interpretations when the corps reached her home tribe before crossing the Rocky Mountains. Moreover, when the corps left this village for the west, she stayed with her husband, who was a fur trapper, to complete the journey. She and their young son could easily have stayed there among their people when her brother was the chief of that Shoshone tribe. Instead, she stayed with her husband and congregation.

Back to the question.

Now back to the question: did Sacajawea voluntarily donate her belt to buy that cloak? Although it is not certain, she could certainly have done it at the behest of the corps’ mission to find a trade route, which she understood. After all, she had been watching the corps collect animal and plant specimens, furs and hides for months.

So during that glamorous moment with the beautiful fur for sale, she could have given Lewis and Clark a nod to add their belt to the trade package. Perhaps quietly and in tears? Yet she also knew that the coastal tribes knew that the corps then had a vested interest in the fur industry. Therefore, these tribes could demand highly prized chieftain’s beads like the blue ones on her belt for quality furs.

Additionally, the very next day after purchasing the fur coat, November 21, 1805, Clark noted in his journal that they gave Sacajawea a “coat of blue cloth” to compensate her for the exchanged belt. That blue coat might have been heavily trimmed in the very fine fabric of a military uniform.
