What Can We Learn From Jesus About Timing (John 7:1-13)?

“You don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run. If you time it, it will go,” Yogi Berra said.

Everyone wants to hit home runs in life. It’s the lack of timing that causes so many strikes.

Mark Twain once wrote, “I have seldom seen an opportunity until it has ceased to be.”

In Jesus we learn that God’s timing is like hitting that home run without really swinging. During his ministry, so many people tried to pull him and push him in so many directions. Through it all, he focused on listening to his Father’s voice and focused on his mission. This mission would result in his loving sacrifice on the cruel cross where Jesus poured out his life to pay for our sins.

“We can learn by remembering the Garden of Gethsemane, when God said it was time for Jesus to sacrifice himself for our sins so they could be washed away,” says ten-year-old Benjamin.

We must remember that Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him when Judas and the soldiers came to get him in the Garden of Gethsemane (John 18:4). Yet he stepped forward, knowing that this was God the Father’s timing to make the ultimate sacrifice.

“In everyday life, God has perfect timing for even the smallest things,” says Emily, 12. “That’s why we should always trust the Lord because he has perfect timing for everyone.”

The entire life of Jesus can be viewed through the lens of timing. Let’s start with his birth. Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem because of a decree from Emperor Augustus that said everyone should register for taxes. Since the division of the land in Israel was tied to tribal origins, Joseph and Mary from the tribe of Judah traveled to Bethlehem, located in the land of their ancestors in Judea.

Joseph and Mary were certainly aware of the prophecy from the prophet Micah that foretold that the Jewish messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). They must have been amazed that the registration decree from the Roman emperor coincided perfectly with the birth of the Christ child.

There are many lists of scriptures that deal with the timing of Jesus’ childhood and ministry. Here are some of the more notable ones: An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to go to Egypt to escape the murderous decree of King Herod (Matthew 2:13). Herod ordered the murder of all the children of Bethlehem two years of age and younger (Matthew 2:16-18). After consulting the wise men, King Herod decided to eliminate the future rival.

When Jesus’ brothers urged him to go to Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles and “show himself to the world,” Jesus said, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready” (John 7:4 and 6). . Jesus knew that his brothers did not believe in him. That is why he told them that their time is always ready. In other words, they needed to believe in him as their savior. Jesus also knew that some of the religious Jews in Jerusalem wanted to kill him.

Remember this truth: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
