Las Vegas in the early 1950s was still in the midst of a massive cultural and economic shift. The spot that would give Vegas a “cool” reputation was still in the dream stage. Legendary producer Jack Entratter was still hard at work at the Copacabana club in New York, and The Sands weren’t far-sighted. That is until 1952, after Las Vegas became famous for some complicated business deals, The Sands was cleverly executed. All myths and rumors aside, The Sands ended up being one of the hottest spots in town after the premiere as producer Jack Entratter worked to make the Copa room the heart of the infamous city’s nightlife. A few months after it opened, Frank Sinatra agreed to come and help his good friend Jack, as Sinatra’s career was in the midst of a downward spiral. With Sinatra’s new movie opening just months before his show, and his headlining spot at the hottest club in Vegas, Frank was soon back on top and loving every minute of it.

The next year, Entratter played according to his talent to select beautiful girls, set the standard and code to select Copa Girls. Always polite, Jack asked for little beyond “Look pretty!” Entratter felt that all his guests wanted were beautiful girls in colorful dresses interacting with guests in a relaxed atmosphere, and it eventually became a model for great success. Having your entertainers negotiate for the casino crowds also ended up being a huge attraction, who wouldn’t want Sinatra or Dean Martin’s Roulette handling your poker game? Entratter certainly didn’t know that he was creating a style and standard that the city would live by and celebrate, but he also didn’t know that he helped put together the foundation of one of the biggest draws Las Vegas has ever known, The Rat Pack. Staying on top wasn’t easy, getting big names like Dean Martin and Sammie Davis Jr. were measures to ensure Copa Rooms’ reputation as show business royalty. In 1960, the sands became headquarters for the filming of the movie “Oceans Eleven,” starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. During filming, the hotel hosted an all-star event called “Summit at the Sands” where the men performed together on stage for the first time… the rest is history.

Audiences went crazy for the Rat Pack, selling out every show, sometimes twice a night. Every member of the pack always popped into a club or casino for a show or a drink, though no one really knew when and with whom, so hitting the sand on any random night was even more of an allure. never know who to expect!
