There are many perks to working for Peerflix, but one of the biggest aspects of the job is that we all get to watch a lot of movies. And unlike most offices, our “water cooler” discussions usually take the form of a Siskel and Roper style debate. Since this week’s staff recommendation comes from two of our staff members, Kristine Avila and Tom Sirijaoonchai. Each of them watched and wrote about the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Kristine says: If you’re into romantic comedies, you can’t miss this one. Although the plot line is somewhat formulaic, the film has more cultural intelligence and depth than your average “chick flick”.

Nia Vardalos is both the screenwriter and the female protagonist, and she seems refreshingly “normal.” Ms. Vardalos based the story on events from her own Greek-American upbringing. In the film, she plays Toula, a 30-year-old devoted daughter of a large Greek family. Her family thinks of her as a queen and is desperate for her to find a handsome Greek to settle down with. Toula helps run the family restaurant and one day finds herself pouring coffee for a man, Ian (played by John Corbett, widely known for his role as Aidan in “Sex and the City”), who is very attracted to her. Meeting someone like Ian strengthens her inner desire to find her own place in the world. To achieve this, she decides to go back to school, update her look (loses her glasses, changes her wardrobe and hair), and eventually gets a job at her aunt’s travel agency, where she meets Ian again. The pair begin secretly dating and she finds him to be perfect for her in every way – except he’s not Greek!

The rest of the storyline may be fairly transparent, especially given the title, but the viewer gets a glimpse of traditional Greek culture (which those of us who grew up in different ethnic cultures can relate to, i.e. the customs or practices your family considered normal, which outsiders find absurd). Overall, it’s a light, fun story that will lift your spirits and leave a smile on your face.

Tom says, “Say any word and I’ll tell you the Greek root of that word,” said Gus Portokalos, the eccentric father in the hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The funny story tells about an American-born Greek girl, Maria Portokalos (Nia Vardolos), who is looking for her one true love. However, it is not that simple. The obstacle between her and her prince charming Ian (Sex and the City’s John Corbett) is her family heritage, as she must marry a Greek to please her parents.

Created from the real life experience of lead actress Nia Vardolos, My Big Fat Greek Wedding depicts the life and traditions of a Greek-American family, especially their family values; this includes the role of the extended family in the young heroine’s life, which is rare in today’s fast-paced society. The lesson from this cute movie is that love is not about a person’s race or origin. As Gus Portokalos says in the movie, “In the end, we’re all fruit.”
