Book Review – The Alphabet Sisters by Monica McInerney

I can’t explain why it took me until 2013 to read my first Monica McInerney novel. She is an Australian born author with international bestsellers including: A Taste for It, Upside Down Inside Out, Spin the Bottle and most recently Lola’s Secret. I often swap books with friends and family and I was unfamiliar with Monica McInerney until I was handed a book called The Alphabet Sisters. The book was a quick read full of dynamic characters that came to life with the authors great detail of physical traits as well as emotional traits. McInerney weaves a beautiful story of a family in turmoil who overcome their own fear and selfish pride. I can only apologize for not reading this wonderful story sooner (it was copyrighted in 2004) and I can say without a doubt that I will be reading more of McInerney’s books in the very near future.

This beautiful work takes place in the Clare Valley of South Australia just before the 80th birthday of Lola, the grandmother of the Alphabet sisters. Lola decides to find her estranged granddaughters in the family’s small motel in beautiful wine country. The girls comply with their grandmother (rather reluctantly) and come to the motel. They have no intention of being as close as they once were as a touring singing group like the infamous Alphabet Sisters with their outlandish outfits and show tunes. The family dynamic ranges from awkward and tense to tender and loving throughout the story. McInerney has a way of bringing characters to life without making any individual the antagonist. Each of the sisters likes something: Anna is the oldest and quick to take charge, Bett is the middle child who feels awkward and insecure from time to time, and Carrie is the youngest and the only sister she never had. she left and was still in the Clare Valley running a motel with her parents when her siblings returned. Lola is the funny grandmother and matriarch of the family; she too has a secret that will only be revealed at the end of the book. To find out more about her secret, you can pick up a copy of Lola’s Secret, which was shortlisted for General Fiction Book of the Year 2012 at the Australian Book Industry Awards and was published in the US in October 2012.

The Alphabet Sisters takes a closer look at family dynamics, sibling relationships and rivalries, secrets and different points of view. McInerney brought to life many unique characters whose bonds and relationships delighted their elderly grandmother Lola, who was the catalyst for reuniting the family and mending broken relationships. McInerney’s first job out of high school, at age 17, was as a wardrobe girl and later as a scriptwriter. She drew from her own environment as the Alphabet Sisters story unfolded with a house play, auditions, local amateur talent and a packed show to fund a new ambulance for their town.
