Suicide in India: Harassment Is the Silent Killer Worse Than Terrorism
India is the suicide capital of the world:
In this article, I have reproduced the suicide trend and facts in India from a news blog to highlight the need to reform a system that slowly tortures and kills, a system that silently suffocates the spirit, which in my opinion is worse than terrorist instant killing and far worse crime.
It is estimated that over 100,000 people die by suicide every year in India. India alone contributes to more than 10% of suicides in the world. The suicide rate in India has been steadily increasing, reaching 10.5 (per 100,000 population) in 2006, a 67% increase from 1980. Most suicides occur in males and in younger age groups. Despite the seriousness of the problem, information about the causes and risk factors is insufficient.
India is now reported to be the suicide capital of the world, with over 121,000 people taking their own lives in 2009. People who commit suicide frequently in India include indebted farmers, disenfranchised women and love-sick students. In India, one farmer committed suicide every 32 minutes between 1997 and 2005, based on calculations from National Crime Records Bureau statistics. According to the latest statistics from India’s National Crime Records Bureau, 127,151 people committed suicide in India in 2009. This represents an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the previous year’s figures. Farmers and students are most at risk. Suicides in the service category make up 11 percent. Recent suicide cases reported in the news indicate an increase in suicides in this category.
The main cause of suicide is harassment and victimization:
In most cases, harassment appears to be the primary cause, but no one has yet been found to have been punished for mistreating a subordinate, spouse, or client. A few years ago a senior officer in my colony in Delhi committed suicide by jumping off the roof, the reason I suspect is harassment. Today’s recent news is about a young police officer belonging to 2002 batch IPS posted in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh. He shot himself in the head on March 12, 2012. The police found a suicide note which revealed that he was suffering mental agony due to the high hand of his senior officer and a high court judge. Another recent report on 11 March 2012 reported the suicide of a 31-year-old civil service aspiring woman. Against this kind of development, it is ironic to either commit suicide for failing an exam to become a civil servant or to commit suicide after passing a test for a coveted job. Due to the possibility of many unreported deaths due to harassment stress and depression as well as unreported cases of victimization, the statistics and evidence need to be ascertained through proper research as this has been found to be an area that is severely lacking in India.
When I joined the service, my top boss, who belonged to the older generation of the esteemed Indian Civil Service, advised me to pack up and go home, as I would be wasting my talent and potential in the jungle of wolves. After that, throughout my career, I often heard and saw unhappiness in all areas of the civil service, stemming mainly from bullying and harassment. In most cases, one is forced by circumstances to waste excess precious time and resources on solving problems, leaving little time to build a positive contribution to organizational growth. The ‘crab mentality’ as we used to call it in India is causing the decadence of Indian civil service and I see this as a key limitation to India’s growth as a global power. In a recent televised debate on India’s governance problem, none of the panelists seemed to understand the missing link in Indian governance, except the co-founder of In-fosys Technologies, who pointed out the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of the Indian state administration. But how do you start the process of correcting errors? No one seemed to know how to start the repair process.
Positive thinking in a negative environment:
Instead of taking the extreme step of self-demolition, one can choose to struggle in the midst of a negative environment to bring positivism to improve the system, no matter how impossible it may seem. While a few strong individuals can withstand harassment and torture, the majority who often succumb to torture are no exception. In order to protect the right to life as mandated by the Constitution, harassment and victimization deserve the strongest condemnation and its practice is punishable by law. A supportive government will take responsibility for wrongdoing, encourage research to improve the situation, and figure out a way to reward contributors for building a better system. The opposite happens in India, where agents do not respond to problems, discourage talent and potential, and instead punish good performance mostly out of jealousy under the psychological trap of the so-called “crab mentality”.
India’s democratic governance is still far from the dream of real freedom and liberty under the vicious chain of such harassment and persecution. A nation that fails to protect and nurture its human assets is a failed nation despite impressive economic growth.
