Brainstorming For Meaning and Happiness

With all the news these days, people can start to feel a little down. Brainstorming can do wonders for improving the mood in the office. And you never know, maybe just as a bonus, you’ll get some great new ideas to help the flow of work in the workplace.

Brainstorming sessions usually work well for groups under 15. It’s also good to have a good brainstorm with just three or four people, and it’s not impossible to do it with just two, like in the advertising industry.

For the purposes of this article, let’s stick with the idea of a small group of about 6 to 12 people. Now, every brainstorming session must have a leader, and it can be a great idea to assign someone to be a note-taker who can quickly record the ideas that come in, while the leader keeps a friendly check on the group. Some companies hire a qualified consultant as a Brainstorm Session Leader or a manager who is suitable for this type of activity may be preferred.

As I mentioned before, the real world can be a bit depressing with all the problems that are going on, however it is very important to keep a positive and upbeat attitude during brainstorming sessions. Let them know up front that any Nelly nags or naysayers will be asked to “try again later” and the decision will be up to the leader and that is final. Maybe the person is feeling a bit miserable and can’t ‘get in the mood’, even though they might be the ones who could benefit the most from the session. You will have to be a careful judge in this matter.

Let’s take a moment to discuss “R” driven thinking and “L” driven thinking and the “symphony” that occurs between them. First, let me mention a book I just read that seriously inspired me to write this article for you. The book is called A Whole New Mind, Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel H. Pink. A former White House speechwriter, Pink has a clear understanding of how the world works, his wisdom on social, economic and cultural trends challenges the conventional wisdom of industrial-age technocratic thinking and sheds light on our true capacities for creativity. If this topic is unexplored territory for you, Pink’s book, now out in paperback, is more than just a “must read,” it may become one of your favorite tools in your toolbox.

As Pink explains in his persuasive and thought-provoking book, the right and left brains are by no means completely separate, and certainly both sides work together, in “symphony”, but not at the expense of one. Especially for our creative Brainstorming “jam-session”.

Understanding the benefits of Brainstorming.

Of course, our first impression of brainstorming would be that an idea pops up and we all hit the jackpot. Company productivity will explode and we will all become millionaires overnight. Poorly. Of course you don’t want to rule it out, but it’s a long shot. However, if brainstorming is handled correctly, you can almost guarantee that you will get very positive results.

Please don’t end up in 15 or 20 minutes of frustration with a room full of disappointed faces. Daniel Pink mentions five basic rules for brainstorming in his book, where he credits Tom Kelly’s excellent book, The Ten Faces of Innovation.

Here are five rules:

1. Go to Quantity. Set a goal for a certain number of ideas to write down on a whiteboard, flipchart, screen, or whatever. It could be 50. It could be 100. It could depend on how many minutes you have for the meeting. But with lots of ideas, you can get some great ones later.

2. Encourage wild ideas. If a few balls land in the stands, keep swinging. To cheer, support and encourage even the most far-fetched and even nonsensical ideas. Here you can take your opponents up a few notches and have some fun. If you’re still stuck with a real sourpuss, don’t risk tearing down the whole room, the session is meant to get you into a creative mind, have fun and create some positive expectations. Of course they won’t beat anyone up here, but if there’s still a real stick in the mud in the room, they have to be asked to leave and ‘try again another day’, no hard feelings. Just keep coming up with the crazy ideas. (Hopefully that sourpuss isn’t a CEO or a CEO – trust me, it happens! If so – give them a copy of Pink’s A Whole New Mind, with a smile, of course. They’ll thank you later.)

3. Be visual. Creativity can be unlocked with graphics images. A great discussion starter is to grab some tape and scissors and spend five minutes cutting up some pictures from a magazine to create an invention, fashion, design or some crazy new product. (Put the tools away after 5 minutes) Or just try drawing on paper, there are lots of techniques in this area. But keep in mind rule number two.

4. Withhold judgment. There are no bad ideas, eccentric, weird and crazy – all calls are good. If you hear laughter during brainstorming, you’re on the right track. Carefree, creative and playful fun is a matter of thinking controlled by the right brain.

5. One interview at a time please. A little friendly-firm control is good. The leader will listen, be polite and allow group participation to build on the ideas and suggestions of others. The room can get buzzing at times, so let everyone get their ideas as best they can – a turn at a time.

Brainstormers are not required to cook it all up. This can be done by the leader later. It is highly likely that there were some great moments at this meeting. It is possible that some very beneficial connection has occurred. More than likely, some people have been supported by others and encouraged like never before since they have been working there. It is very likely that some friendships have grown and new levels of communication have emerged between people who may have rarely spoken to each other before. It’s possible that in the coming days or weeks, these newfound communication skills will benefit the company’s function and purpose, and what’s more, create a rewarding sense of camaraderie and teamwork within the group.

The concept of being able to enjoy the workplace is growing by leaps and bounds. There will remain many vestiges of the bygone days of industrialism and technocratic thinking, where there is little room for carefree, creative thought. Nowadays, as we are all well aware, a very large part of technical functions are easily outsourced, while the ability to be personal and creative to solve problems becomes much more valuable, the workplace atmosphere must be able to change enough to support this. The alternatives are grim.

Our brainstorming sessions can produce more than just a few good ideas within the flow and functioning of company operations. Meaningful group relationships generally mean a happier crew. The very idea of ”meaning” stems from a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging and acceptance, because every relationship is personal on many levels. A touch of recognition from management, understanding and the ability to focus on people’s well-being can change the reason and meaning of what we all do at work.

If these are the results of the brainstorming sessions, it could be a positive and meaningful change to hold these sessions regularly. As mentioned in Daniel Pink’s book, work and play are not opposites. He goes on to explain how depression is the opposite of play. With a certain thought driven by the right brain, it is clear how creativity, a little fun and a positive atmosphere can bring great meaning to one’s work.

Enjoy!
