Wedding Photography – Poses and Must Take Shots

The following are the events that a photographer should capture during a typical wedding day. Some things are not listed here because no two events are exactly the same. If there are important events happening at the event you are filming that are not listed here, you need to capture them as well.

Take these shots of the bride at home or at the bride’s meeting place:

Applying makeup or doing hair

Putting on a garter with a few other ladies around

Fully dressed with mother or parents

Fully clothed alone holding flowers..full length

With bridesmaids (if space and time allow)

Going to church

Getting into or approaching a limo or car, ready to go to church (preferably with a bridesmaid)

In the church:

Arrival at the Church (The Bride)

Groom:

Waiting in the church. (usually in a back room or office.)

Posed shot with bachelors

With the best man

Ceremony:

Each member of the wedding party walks down the aisle. (If you miss someone because they are moving too fast, focus on the next one).

The bride-to-be is coming down the aisle. This shot is not to be missed under any circumstances. Take 3 or 4 in case your eyes are closed in one.

The entire wedding party at the altar (if possible)

Bride and groom

At or around the altar during the ceremony. Take different shots from different angles. Before them and behind them.

Exchange of rings.

First kiss: Please be prepared for this. If possible, take more than one. Be there because guests will start getting out of their seats to get this shot.

Leaving altar: Take a few pictures while reversing.

On the reception line (if any)

Wedding reception on the church steps or in front of the entrance

The couple posed in and around a limousine or car.

Official Images: Take a few pictures of each of these positions!

The entire wedding party together including ring bearers and flower girls. (Sometimes the bride or groom will want to include some family members. If they ask, do so and then have the wedding party without family members unless they are part of the wedding party)

Bride with maid of honor including flower girl(s)

Then with the Maid of Honor

All the men in the group including the ring bearer

Groom and best man.

Newlyweds together: Shoot a lot from these poses. They are money shots and will increase your sales if done right.

The new Mr. and Mrs. with certain family members. Try to keep it to your parents, grandparents or immediate family members. Let the couple know that taking pictures with every relative or friend at this time would be time consuming and would slow down the days of the meeting. You can get shots of other family members and friends during the reception.

Bride Alone: Take a few different shots. This is money.

Groom himself: Once again, take numerous shots

On reception:

Members of the wedding party entering the reception hall.

The bride and groom enter the reception. Take a few pictures.

Toasts. If possible, photograph the person toasting with the newlyweds in the frame.

First dance: Take several shots from different angles.

Cutting the cake: Take a picture of the cake before cutting it. Then imagine cutting the cake. (be ready for shots like them feeding each other or smearing each other’s cake)

Take photos of the newlyweds with guests and friends in the reception hall. Some can be honest and some can pose. Check with the bride and groom. They let you know who they want pictures with or who they want pictures with. These shots can be taken while idle.

Bouquet Toss:: Try to lean in to catch the end of her throw and the women reaching out to catch the bouquet.

The groom throws the garter

Couple Waving Goodbye: This can be taken in or out. If you’re leaving before they do, just pose and take it. When the pictures come back, no one will know the difference.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. You should take as many photos as possible to provide an accurate record of the day’s events. Stay alert and keep shooting. Good luck!
