The Art of Spanking
Our two wonderful daughters were born just a few years after Dr. Benjamin Spock’s “The Care of Child and Child.” Fortunately for our family, neither my wife nor I ever read it. According to the Wikipedia article, Spock was the first pediatrician to study psychoanalysis to try to understand children’s needs and family dynamics. One of his alleged teachings, which would then be 180 degrees contrary to mine and my wife’s (and now our grown children’s and their children’s) teachings, was that parents should be more flexible and kind to and treat their children as Individuals. In short, my understanding is that Dr. Spock was against parents hitting their children. The previous conventional wisdom that my parents and most other parents of my generation believed was that raising children should focus on building discipline. Our parents (and we) believed in lots of love, constant attention, and mutual respect, mixed with occasional discipline when needed.
I have never read a word of Dr. Spock, I wouldn’t try to criticize any of this – just report what was going on in our family. When our girls were growing up, we sometimes heard other parents say, “Doctor Spock says you shouldn’t spank your kids… You should talk to them…” We listened politely, but continued in our old ways that taught us our very old fashioned mums and dads – which was “Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child”.
My twenty-five years of traffic management experience never qualified me to speak intelligently on the subject of childcare or psychoanalysis. However, having grown up fearing retaliation (a beating) if I misbehaved, I can definitely say that this particular fear sticks with you for a long time. In my case, I remember almost eighty years back (yes, 80 grand) when my aunt slapped me right across the face for something I did. It must have been some serious misconduct (although I don’t remember what I did wrong), but I certainly remember the punishment. So I (and my wife) put that bit of remembering into practice as we taught our own little ones what would happen if they didn’t do the right thing. It’s amazing how well it worked for us – and for them. At the beginning of their young lives, we calmly explained our philosophy to them – be naughty, ignore mom or dad’s instructions, hurt or seriously trouble a brother or sister or anyone and you will be spanked. Here comes the critical part: Since Dad was at work during the day and Mom was able to control her anger during a childish act worthy of discipline, she calmly told the culprit, “Honey, what you just did deserves a spanking.” which will be handed to you for a spanking tonight when your papa comes home from work.” Now, if the mischievous act had occurred early in the morning, the child had spent hours worrying about the impending punishment that was sure to come. Believe me – the anticipation was considerably worse than the actual spanking when it was finally delivered. So my theory is this: “A slap or spanking at the moment of misbehavior doesn’t last that long – it’s soon forgotten. Or, if you remember it at all, it was that mommy or daddy lost their temper that day.”
Now comes the funny part: One evening when I got home from work, my wife told me that our youngest daughter had been naughty earlier that day and that our little girl was already waiting for me to spank her. chair. As the little one stood over the arm of the couch, ready for her punishment but still pleading her case, I lifted her skirt and prepared her for my usual harmless slap or slaps. The sight that greeted me (and I quickly called my wife to see) was the outline of one of the children’s Golden Books under her panties. No man on this earth, with any compassion in his soul, could spank that little girl that night. I was no exception. Mom and I laughed and cried at the same time; and I’m even crying right now writing this story.
By the way, I think our spanking chair was probably gone when our son was born. So he probably didn’t suffer from too much expectation and didn’t even get the beating he might have deserved. He was an inferno – one of those described in an old nursery rhyme that goes something like: “What are little boys made of? Scissors and snails and puppy tails. That’s what little boys are made of.” The rest need not be quoted. We all know that little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything pretty.
Maurice Chevalier in Gigi certainly had it right when he sang that beautiful song “Thank Heaven For Little Girls” Just another memory that will stay with you forever.
