How to Start a Service Business in an Area You Have Little Or No Experience
When it comes to the rising unemployment in Nigeria and most countries of the world, one option that immediately comes to mind is to churn out business ideas and make a living from such businesses.
As good as the business may seem, certain challenges are likely to be faced by a budding/aspiring entrepreneur who finds it difficult to gain market attention due to lack of experience in their chosen career path.
Among other qualities, experience is of course the most essential requirement needed for a successful service business. However, this does not mean that some services cannot be undertaken with little or no experience.
If you are thinking of starting an interior decoration business, you will most likely do well if you have worked in an organization or with someone who has similar interests. Imagine someone starting a business offering human relations management services, but has never worked in an HR firm or as an HR administrator for a company!
Experience easily brings the judgment you would need to run your business. This is the most important skill needed in the service industry (and perhaps in all types of businesses).
All hope is not lost if you are just a fresher. You can start a specific service business and do well even if you have not worked professionally in a similar field. “How?” You ask. I’ll tell you now.
Let me identify two types of experience. They are: 1. Practical experience; and 2. Self-acquisition of experience.
Practical experience is the type of training you receive as a result of your involvement in a particular activity. Here you will learn this skill first hand; you make mistakes/mistakes and get corrected. Over the years, hands-on experience has proven to be the most accepted method of training employees, and many companies are aware of this fact. A novice accountant cannot in any way be compared with an accountant with many years of practical experience. Likewise, an experienced salesperson will outperform a beginner in most cases.
However, it should be noted that gaining corporate experience is not limited to the practical level. At the self-acquisition level of experience, you engage in a conscious, self-acquisition exercise to get ahead in your chosen career.
You can quickly use the following methods to become an expert trader:
1. Read books by people who have several years of practical experience in the field that interests you. For example, one of the professional books that shaped my career is The Corporate Communications Bible by Robert Dilenschneider. In a single book, I was able to gain public relations “wisdom” that took the author decades to learn!
2. Attend professional trainings/short courses. Attending programs of this nature gives you a unique opportunity to listen to the experts as they teach. In most cases, you have the opportunity to ask questions and practice what you have learned.
3. Subscribe and regularly read newsletters (either paper or electronic). Newsletters offer unique information that you won’t find anywhere else. Your self-education efforts may pay off by reading the next newsletter.
4. Connect with “older” friends. You have no business spending time with people who don’t know as much as you do. Pitch your tent with people who have outdone you (and are successful) in a similar business. Let them mentor you. When you do, their experience rubs off on you.
5. Claim what you’ve earned. It is important to note that acquisition does not mean use. It is necessary to apply the acquired wisdom. Start small. Offer the kind of service for which you can offer immediate solutions. The more you use what you know, the more skilled you will become in the art and the more experienced you will be in the field! In the words of Dr. David Oyedepa: “Every fact you find and use gives you control over life’s circumstances.”
