Why Ferrets Steal Things
The word ferret has its origins in Latin and translates to mean little thief. With this bit of knowledge, it shouldn’t surprise you that ferrets like to steal things and hoard them.
My ferrets take anything they can pull. I saw my little, pound girl trying to carry a dog’s sterilized bone; the bone weighs more than she does. (The only reason she failed is because the dog saw her dragging the bone across the room and intervened.) They appropriated my shoes, wrist brace, and stuffed toys. They picked up bookmarks, balls and bowls of food. They stole computer mice, handkerchiefs and socks. They removed the apples, potatoes and staple removers. If they can pirate an item, they will.
So after my ferrets get an object of desire, they hoard it. Almost every stolen item ends up in the same place. They may move their caches after I clear, but there is usually only one cache at a time. I found the cache under their cage. Once the hideout was behind the TV and once they put everything into one of my husband’s speakers. Currently, my kids love moving objects around in their Tower of Fun, a tube that twists up and down. Fuzzies love to slide down the slopes of the Tower of Fun, so it’s a little strange that they have toys blocking their way of sliding fun. Still, yes.
Why?
Because I don’t speak ferret and my ferrets don’t speak human, I can only guess based on their natural behavior in the wild. Ferrets (from which our domesticated ferrets were domesticated) are carnivores. They are hunters. They kill things smaller than themselves (usually smaller, but I’ve seen videos of ferrets killing things bigger than themselves). So the ferret kills the mouse and eats it. It hides the leftovers when it’s done. If a ferret kills an animal that is too large to eat in one sitting, the ferret will hide the carcass to finish it off later. And in all these cases, ferrets try to prevent other animals from getting their prey.
I think that’s probably the best explanation for why ferrets steal, but I have one more thought. I often find ferrets sleeping among their stolen treasures. Usually, when he sleeps in his cache, the objects are soft and squishy, like small stuffed toys and other fluffy things. So my second hypothesis is that ferrets like to build cozy beds.
