Les Miserables Film Review

“Change is inevitable in life.” Everything around changes with the passage of time. Every individual gets a chance to make a difference in their life. Some people prefer to do the same things all their lives and avoid change. Others, on the other hand, are not afraid to try new things. He believes that change can be a good thing. Well, in Les Miserables you meet a man who was imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a piece of bread and then decided to change for the better and set things right. This character is none other than Jean Valjean. This review will focus on him. A man who goes through a change – from someone with confused morals to a man with more morals than most, who learns to love and share with respect. The story took place in a country famous for its sophistication – France. It is the year 1800 when the French Revolution is taking place. During the telling of the story, you will see how this ex-convict turned from a hapless criminal into a heroic, brave and peaceful man.

The story began when convict Jean Valjean was released from a French prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread and then attempting to escape from prison. When Valjean arrives in the town of Digne, no one is willing to give him shelter because he is an ex-convict. Desperate, Valjean knocks on the door of Monsieur Myriel, the kind-hearted priest of Digne. Myriel treats Valjean kindly, and Valjean repays the bishop by stealing his silver. When the police arrest Valjean, Myriel covers for him, claiming that the cutlery was a gift. The authorities release Valjean and Myriel makes him promise to become an honest man. Eager to fulfill his promise, Valjean disguises his identity and enters the city of Montreuil-sur-mer. Under the false name of Madeleine, Valjean invents an ingenious manufacturing process that brings prosperity to the town. He eventually becomes the mayor of the town. He unexpectedly meets a young girl named Fantine who has an illegitimate daughter named Cossette. He promised the girl that he would adopt her child and treat her as his own. As time passed, Cossette and Jean Valjean found a new, peaceful life in the convent for a time, but eventually both left the convent and lived again in Paris. Cossette falls in love with a young man named Marius. The political situation in Paris worsens and the city experiences a violent uprising. Marius joins the fight out of desperation. Jean Valjean joins the fight to keep an eye on Marius, even though a part of him wishes Marius was out of Cossette’s life forever. Valjean saves Marius’ life, although Marius does not know who will save him. After Marius recovers, he again pursues Cossette for marriage. Afterwards, Marius found out that it was Valjean who saved him. The newlyweds rush to Valjean’s side just in time for the final reconciliation. Valjean, happy to be reunited with his adopted daughter, dies peacefully.

Symbolism is something that is deeply woven into Les Misérables; hiding in stolen silver candles that encourage healing and a yellow travel permit that suggested social foul play. As for candles, they are not quite recent. They symbolize a deeper meaning. After Jean Valjean is released from prison, the special case that takes him in and treats him like a human is the priest Digne. Unfortunately, still making up for lost time in his old methods of agony and malevolence, just to survive, Valjean takes the silver the priest used during dinner. Silver speaks of the bishop’s aim to approach Valjean with respect; later, when the policeman gets Valjean with a large amount of silver in his knapsack and returns it to the priest, the priest responds by giving Valjean the silver as a blessing and instructs him to take candles as well, giving him advice. that they are worth about two hundred francs. Likewise, he advises Valjean to remember that he “guaranteed to use this cash to make himself a legitimate man.” Not only that, the priest discusses the reclamation and redemption of quality when he says: Jean Valjean, my sibling, you will never have a place with the insidious yet brilliant. It is your spirit that I buy from you; I draw it from the dark contemplation and soul of destruction and offer it to God. Regarding the yellow card, when Jean Valjean finally leaves the penitentiary, he was given this paper. At first it looked like a ticket to flexibility, but it certainly isn’t. It’s more like a ticket to much more misery. And this on the basis that the Yellow Ticket is an image of social release. Jean Valjean is required to constantly communicate this to show individuals that he is an ex-convict, or else he will ignore his parole and incarceration. The problem is that this ticket forces the individual to release it wherever they go. As Valjean tells the priest Myriel, “This is my ticket to leave – yellow, you see. That’s why everyone dismisses me.”

Discuss very unwisely. Whatever he did, he took a piece of bread to encourage his starving family, and as a result, he was thrown behind bars for a long time. Now that he’s taken his chance and is out, the supposed free world seems more pitiful than prison—in light of the fact that he could rest and eat in prison anyway. Unfortunately, because of that yellow ticket, Valjean discovers “the importance of freedom when a yellow ticket is attached to it”, which is far from the freedom of the imagination. The yellow card symbolizes the unpleasant way society treats its untouchables. It shows us that “opportunity” doesn’t mean a mess if it means you can starve and bite the dust.

As someone who doesn’t like watching musicals and plays, Les Miserables opened my eyes to the fact that movies like these are must-sees. The flow of the story is very well organized and well composed. The cinematography and effects were surprisingly good considering the movie was from 2012 and the way the characters portrayed their roles is very stunning. The dialogues were excellently delivered by the characters with the right expressions, emotions and feelings that even the audience can feel the excitement and enthusiasm in every scene. Although some characters have limited exposure time, their role left a big impact on the audience. As for the character of Jean Valjean, it was handled to perfection. The actor is very suitable for this role. It was just a little disappointing because at the end Jean Valjean died. But overall the movie was perfect. It gave viewers a clear idea of how the French Revolution began and ended. Finally, I would like to congratulate the people behind this very good film. Everyone deserves a big round of applause.
