The Painter from Wabasha Street (Part one of two – Narrative or screen)
Part one of two parts
Painter of Wabasha Street
[A Narration written for the screen]
Around 1917, Tony arrives by train in St. Paul in Minnesota. He has nothing but the clothes he wears and $19.00 in his pocket, he was a tailor in Russia and is 24 years old. His first day in town is on the sidewalk on Wabasha Street downtown, not far from the Capitol, at a bar and coffee shop with a few townsfolk hanging around the area and bar. A young man and a girl are looking for work, they are Polish, they have been in town for a few months, Ella and her brother Cory. The girl looks a little scared of the bums because they are half drunk, stumbling, talking loudly and full of moods. Etc.
A car suddenly beeps its horn near a group of people, alerts a horse and a buggy, an elderly man and a young lady are sitting on the seat. The horse jumps and the car goes around the corner and the girl falls out of the buggy and almost falls into Tony’s arms and he catches her before she hits her head on the ground, it’s more like that. . Now everyone is looking at the old man, his buggy, the car, which is somewhat damaged, crashed into a tree. The horse is now settled and everyone is gasping for breath.
The bar owner comes out to see what the fuss is about. The car driver is a bit drunk, he defies everyone and says “…the buggy is too slow, it shouldn’t be on the street!” He’s not sure who he’s talking to, he’s not looking at anyone in particular, not the old man, more the crowd and the girl I should say; the girl Tony is holding. Tony is a stranger, as is the lady, Ella and her brother, who just happen to be there so they don’t say anything, and the young man with the roadster complains to the old man, “Who’s going to pay for the car? Fix it.” Tony speaks very little English (he’s from Gredno, Russia, a small town on the border) and doesn’t understand what’s going on anyway, and Ella knows Russian, she’s from Warsaw, Poland, so they understand each other and briefly speak Russian, his native language , about what’s going on.
“If all these people weren’t out at your bar,” the driver tells the owner, “I wouldn’t be in all this trouble,” implying that he has some responsibility in the matter and can take him to court to fix his car. The owner wasn’t scared and knows who the young man is, he’s from Summit Street, by the cathedral, that’s where F. Scott Fitzgerald lives, he grew up [the rich area of St. Paul]. He knows his father owns a fur trade, a grocery store, and possibly some rental property.
[Blend or fade this statement in, and the following paragraph]
Tony looks at Ella and tells her, “I intend to marry you,” she is caught off guard.
A court date is set and the young man goes to court, calls Ella as a witness and surprisingly the owner calls Tony to be his witness. And the old man and his daughter are in the courtroom too, they have been summoned to court. The suit is presented to Municipal Judge: JL Rosenbourm. Not a fair judge at all and a moody one at that. Finds against the defendant with the plaintiff’s costs. Tony doesn’t help at all and the bar owner is super pissed that no one can speak English and Ella is useless, but Cory likes her and this was a way to keep an eye on her. so it seems. She even looks more sober than drunk, he concluded in his youthful mind. The judge knows Cory’s father, so it’s settled.
Ella’s brother is looking down the judge’s nose (it’s obvious), he’s obviously trash, but he can’t say anything, he just sympathizes with the bartender. He had a raw deal. But that boy, Cory, is spoiled. The bar owner refuses to pay for the damaged car, and the judge says he’ll put him to work on a farm if he doesn’t pay: “Thirty days, I’ll put you on a work farm, and if you complain, I’ll make it 90 days.” He doesn’t complain.
The bar owner goes to the farm to protest, and the car remains to be repaired with Cory’s father’s money.
Cory now asks Ella to go out with him for a ride in his car and meet his family. The girl is also aware of his arrogance, but is still attracted to his good looks and possibly his money; at the same time, she’s also taken a liking to Tony, and Cory realizes that somewhere in his head.
Why didn’t the bar owner get a lawyer, she is mad at him now, hopefully he can serve his time and learn from this. At least he knows people. He gives the job to Tony to paint his bar, inside, and the three apartments upstairs, as he ordered his wife to do in his absence: perhaps this is a dig at Cory, knowing they both like Ella. He is in his late forties and has a 23-year-old boy, Henry, who attends a bar and serves 30 days in the workhouse.
Tony will stay in town now, not have to go anywhere else, so he rents one of Mr. Nelson’s apartments and gets some work from local merchants and owns Wabasha Street. The butcher shop hired him to paint the building inside and also upstairs in the hallways. And several show houses in the street: like the World Theater and the Lyceum want to paint their places. Ella’s brother, Earnest, is now involved and helping Tony, they are a bit of a two-man team.
Three months will pass
Rich young man Cory Gunderson asked Ella to marry him and became mentally engaged to her, but she didn’t say yes or no, and rival Tony, perhaps instinctively knowing something was up, asked her out. marry him a second time. He is determined, but by talking to Cory, who happened to stop by her job at the World Theater where she is now painting something (anything), he finds out that she has accepted his ring. And he leaves. Ella’s brother is stunned, he doesn’t know anything about it (but of course he does Tony’s stuff). Tony wants to blame Earnest for not telling him, he’s furious inside, but he leaves the scene before he hurts anyone, goes back to his apartment and packs his clothes. Earnest followed him and told him a dozen times, “I knew nothing about it, I swear, I really didn’t.”
Tony believes this is the end. He will return to New York and maybe catch a ship back to Russia. I’m not sure exactly his intentions, but I think it’s a pretty good guess; whatever, he’s packing up everything he owns and his intention is to leave town. Earnest sees this and runs home to talk to his sister, she is there crying. “I was afraid to say no to Cory,” she tells Earnest, “after he’s wined and dined me for over three months…” but after hearing that Tony’s leaving town, she breaks down and panics. Earnest’s intention was to light a fire under her feet before Tony left to make her move, and it worked.
Both Earnest and Ella return to Tony’s apartment and jump into each other’s arms, I mean jump… they almost lost each other.
“I came to tell you I called off the wedding,” she said, and he replied, “Do you think you’re going to?” She knows she didn’t have time to do what she said she did.
“Should we run?” Tony says.
She is ting heaven, but nods her head – yes.
