Sopranos Characters – Livia Soprano

Livia Soprano is Tony Soprano’s mother during the first and second seasons of the HBO cable television show, The Sopranos. She is played by Nancy Marchand, who sadly died between seasons two and three, and was very ill during season two. As a result, her primary role in the show takes place during the first season, where she actually participated in a plot to kill her son Tony.
Livia Soprano is an interesting character study because she is a truly horrible person. In fact, Tony’s therapist, Dr. Melfi says he may have borderline personality disorder, which is probably correct. She turns every confrontation and discussion into a discussion about herself and finds a way to be hurt or offended by almost everything that happens around her. He is also extremely paranoid and tends to use his positive encounters to manipulate others into playing roles in his paranoid narratives. At the end of the first season, he manipulates his brother-in-law Junior into trying to kill Tony.
Bad parents in TV shows or movies are often characters from the past or characters who are ultimately redeemed in some way. None of this will ever happen to Livia. Instead, we see her constant scheming and the enormous pressure this puts on Tony and ultimately Janice, his sister. Because she’s their mother, they can’t get rid of her emotionally, and she uses that to her advantage. Even after she dies, Tony continues to date women who are essentially recreations of his mother (even to the point of using her catchphrase “poor you”).
One of the most interesting episodes with Livia is the one where she dies, where she finds out that she didn’t want to have any wakes. After going against her wishes, they find out why: no one had anything nice to say about her. As attempts were made to say nice things about Livia as she became more and more tense, eventually Carmela’s father expressed how much he disliked her and it snowballed from there. It was a very harsh scene, but it left an important impression: if you treat everyone around you like a paranoid, self-centered fantasy, no one will have anything nice to say about you when you die.
