A Goofy Movie – A Time in the Lives of Max and Goofy

A Goofy Movie, released in 1995 as a joint project of Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Productions, is an animated film about Goofy and Max. This father-son tandem is an offshoot of the Disney characters in the TV series Goof Troop. However, Goofy dates back a little further and is one of the original Disney characters alongside Mickey and Donald in the 1930s.

But unlike his contemporaries who portray uncle roles, he is the only one to play the character of a single parent. Meanwhile, Max, who debuted as a child in the said series, will now reprise his role as a teenager in the film.

With his eyes set on Roxanne’s affections, the story opens with Max deciding to ditch his goofy image. However, he goes overboard in doing so when he takes center stage in the middle of a speech to the student body. In the center of attention of director Mazur, together with his friends, he performs the Powerline hit “Stand Out”. Although his identity is initially hidden, he is eventually revealed when he trips during a performance. Still, his performance is a success as the audience enjoys the number immensely.

Predictably, the incident draws the ire of the school administrator, and Principal Mazur quickly tells Goofy about Max’s misfortune. Fearing the consequences, Goofy decides to take his son away to Idaho on a fishing trip. He recalls another similar excursion with his dad when he was Max’s age, but Goofy’s excitement is one-sided. After his impressive act in the school auditorium, Max got Roxanne’s attention and was able to seal a date with her. Now that she’s about to leave, she can’t get the thought out of her mind that she might go with someone else instead. In his desperate attempt to show off some more, he shows off by telling her he’ll be on stage in LA with none other than Powerline! Roxanne believes and promises to watch out for him.

Max finds himself in even deeper trouble and reluctantly joins his father on their fishing escapade. Forced to car camp, chased by Big Foot complete with lost keys, the journey turns from one disaster to another. But through it all, Max never forgets LA, so the next chance he gets, he changes the map towards that destination. Goofy finds out about his son’s annoying behavior and is understandably angry. In the midst of this disagreement, another dangerous situation awaits the two.
