Ingredients in Hair Care Products, The Good the Bad & the Ugly

If you can read and understand what all the ingredients are in your shampoo and conditioner bottles, then congratulations! You are one of a very small percentage of people who can do this. For the rest of us, we seem to blindly trust that manufacturers know what they’re doing. But what exactly are they? Below is a broad overview of some of the most common ingredients you’ll see on these labels.

Sodium lauryl sulfate:

This substance comes from coconut alcohols. This is a surfactant, which is anything that allows oil to mix with water that has a slightly negative charge. It reduces the surface tension between it and water and is used in shampoos for normal to oily and greasy hair. Other surfactants are; ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, potassium coconut hydrolyzed collagen, and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate.

Isopropyl alcohol:

This substance is derived from petroleum and is a desiccant. Isopropyl alcohol should not be left on the scalp for too long as it can begin to strip the top layer of skin. This can leave the scalp prone to infections.

Propylene glycol distearate:

These are crystallized stearic acid and ethylene glycol that give your shampoo a pearly look and feel. It is a common thickener in hair dyes and shampoos and has moisturizing effects on the hair and scalp.

Disodium EDTA:

It is a substance that is a chelating agent that gives shampoos a stable look and feel. This product, like some others, must not be left on the scalp for long as it has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin and allow more chemicals to enter the bloodstream.

Cetearyl alcohol:

Ceterayl, or cetyl alcohol, is made from coconut oil and is used as an emulsifier. This will make your hair feel like velvet. Where glycol distearate makes shampoo look creamy and pearly, cetearyl alcohol gives hair a silky smooth feel.

Good:

These ingredients do several things. It acts as a cleanser to remove dirt, grease and grime from the hair, it also provides a conditioner for your hair and it’s a lather that makes us feel like we’re actually cleaning our hair and scalp. They can make your hair velvety soft, absorb oils or make dry hair moist.

Not good:

These are all chemicals that can be absorbed into the skin and hair. Many of the chemicals in shampoo products are petroleum or alcohol based, some of which are the same products used to make antifreeze or garage floor cleaner to name a few.

Ugly:

There may be health risks associated with all of the above chemicals. All have the potential to be absorbed into the scalp and down into the bloodstream, where they can deposit in major organs such as the brain, eyes, heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver, where they can remain for some time and cause damage. Special care should be taken to ensure that children of all ages avoid getting these chemicals in their eyes as they can cause potential permanent damage. Long-term use may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, and in some cases (such as disodium EDTA) may have carcinogenic effects on the body.

More people are becoming health conscious about and avoiding processed foods, but what about all those chemicals? They are also processed, and while they may all come from nature, processing changes the chemical structure to the point where the body doesn’t know what it is.

If you choose to use these ingredients, I can only suggest that you shampoo and rinse quickly to avoid absorption as much as possible. Better yet, find chemical-free cleansing shampoos and conditioners and avoid possible contamination altogether!
